Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This is a compact, high-effort outdoor adventure built around Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata. The route is free when you bring your own equipment, but a county waiver must be completed online. If you do not own a via ferrata lanyard, rent one locally for approximately $30 per person; harnesses and helmets alone are not sufficient. Bring gloves, water, snacks, sun protection, and clothing suitable for a long exposed climb. Keep both lanyard clips managed carefully and remain clipped in as directed. Use extended arms rather than relying on your biceps, and choose a route difficulty that matches your strength and comfort. The full climb took approximately 4.5 hours to the top and may take close to 6 hours round trip, with an approximately one-hour hike back. Ashley Gorge is suitable as an introduction to via ferrata, but the exposed ladders, wire walks, bridge, and upper sections require confidence, endurance, and comfort with heights. A guide is available for beginners who want instruction. Dinosaur National Monument is also part of Vernal's attraction base, with real dinosaur bones that visitors can touch.
Itinerary highlights
What is in this plan
Day 1: Ashley Gorge Preparation and Route Selection
Use the first day to prepare for the long climb and understand the route options. The via ferrata is free with personal equipment, while the lanyard can be rented locally for approximately $30 per person. Complete the county waiver before arriving. Start early, as the climb can occupy most of the day. Route choices range from single blue to double blue and double black; the middle route is a sensible choice if you want a serious challenge without exhausting yourself too early.

Begin at Ashley Gorge Via Ferrata, described as a bolted climb on the side of a mountain and the largest public via ferrata in North America. Bring or rent the required lanyard and complete the county waiver before climbing.

Use gloves from the beginning. They make gripping the rungs and cable, and clipping in and out, substantially easier on the hands.

Practice the two-clip system at the start: keep one clip attached at all times while moving the other. This is the basic rhythm for the route.

Use the opening descent and first section to assess your comfort before committing to the harder upper route. A bench and an exit point provide an early opportunity to pause or leave if the effort is too much.

Choose the double-blue middle route if you want a demanding but manageable experience. The double-black option appeared early enough to cause significant forearm fatigue, so save the hardest sections for later only if you have the strength.

Keep your arms extended whenever possible rather than pulling with your biceps. This helps manage the forearm pump during re-clipping and steep cable sections.
Day 2: Full Ashley Gorge Climb and Dinosaur National Monument
Allow most of the day for the full route. The climb took approximately 4.5 hours to reach the top and may approach 6 hours round trip including the hike back. Carry snacks and water, use shaded ledges for breaks, and expect increasing fatigue in the second half. After the climb, use the following day or remaining energy for Vernal's dinosaur focus rather than adding another demanding technical activity.

Cross the approximately 100-foot bridge, a two-person section with strong exposure and noticeable movement in the middle. Stay clipped in and pause before entering if you need to settle your nerves.

Pause at the viewpoint before the Helix ladder. It is a useful rest location before the route climbs directly upward into one of the newer and hardest sections.

Approach the black-rated Jurasskicked section only after taking a snack break if needed. Its dinosaur-themed name fits the area, but the timing makes it demanding because it arrives when climbers are already fatigued.

Climb Exposure Therapy, the spiral ladder and most exposed feature described on the route. Use the lanyard's resting clip if your arms become pumped, allowing your harness to carry your weight while you recover.

Rest at the summit before beginning the return hike. The top provides a natural stopping point after the exposed climbing, although the route still includes an approximately one-hour hike back to the car.

Visit Dinosaur National Monument to experience the part of Vernal known for real dinosaur bones that visitors can touch. Treat this as a lower-intensity cultural and fossil-focused follow-up to the climb.
