A Budget Backpacker's 4-Day Adventure in Kyushu: Fukuoka Yatais & Beppu's Geothermal Wonders

Arrive at the main transit hub of Fukuoka. This is where you can activate your rail passes and transition easily into the city.

Head to the canal-side strip where over 100 open-air food stalls (yatai) are set up and taken down every single night. The atmosphere is bustling, hot, and incredibly social.

Try the famous Hakata Ramen at one of the intimate yatai stalls. Be warned: the traditional tonkotsu broth has a very distinct, pungent aroma (often compared to old socks or vinegar) due to the boiling of pork bones. It is a polarizing but authentic local culinary experience.

Cleanse your palate after the ramen with some incredibly juicy grilled corn. Watch as the vendor uses a massive flamethrower to perfectly char every single kernel.

Arrive in Beppu via an early morning train from Fukuoka. This coastal town on the island of Kyushu is widely considered the Onsen capital of Japan.

Grab a budget-friendly breakfast of Greek yogurt and nuts from a local 7-Eleven and enjoy it right on the beach looking out at the ocean.

Visit the oldest of Beppu's seven 'Hells' (Jigoku). This spectacular hot spring features a vibrant red color caused by high concentrations of iron and magnesium oxide. At 95°C, it is too hot to bathe in, but you can buy therapeutic mineral-rich mud and water products here.

A must-visit among the Hells of Beppu. This stunning hot spring features a brilliant Gatorade-blue, aquamarine pool surrounded by lush greenery. Don't miss the hard-boiled eggs cooked directly in the steaming geothermal waters.

Embark on an incredible packrafting adventure through this jaw-dropping gorge. The hike down to the water is steep and sketchy, requiring water shoes, wetsuits, and holding onto a guide rope. Once on the water, inflate your packrafts and paddle upstream surrounded by towering cliffs and lush greenery.

Ditch your packrafts for a short field trip on foot into a hidden cave along the gorge. Inside, you can see a massive tree trunk that got perfectly wedged between the gorge walls during a major storm.

Experience traditional 'Jigokumushi' (hell-steaming) cooking. Select your own fresh vegetables, dumplings, and proteins, then use the natural volcanic steam chambers to cook your meal. Staff are on hand to guide you through the process, and a variety of dipping sauces are provided.

Visit Beppu's most famous historic bakery, established in 1916. There is almost always a queue outside, but it moves fast. Be sure to try their legendary chocolate chip French bun or sweet red bean buns.

Conclude your Kyushu journey by boarding an overnight ferry to transition to your next destination island. This is a highly efficient and budget-friendly way to travel while saving on a night's accommodation.
