Plan notes

Useful context before you go

A compact three-day road-trip plan for exploring Connemara by campervan, combining scenic drives, an accessible summit hike, wild swimming, historic scenery, and coastal viewpoints. For Diamond Hill, the red trail is the route to the summit, with a well-maintained path, gravel, rocks, and steeper steps near the top; runners were sufficient. If hiking at sunset, leave enough daylight for the descent, which offers excellent views of its own. At Glassilaun Beach, expect cold water even in good weather; staying in the sea for three or four minutes helps your legs adapt. Clifden is the recommended base for evenings and a few pints. Kylemore Abbey can be viewed freely from the car park, while entry to the grounds was €18 per person at the time of filming.

What is in this plan

Days 1-3 Connemara Mountains, Beaches and Coastal Stops

Use one Connemara base, with Clifden specifically recommended for evenings. The route links the Killary Fjord drive, Diamond Hill, Glassilaun Beach, Kylemore Abbey, Pine Island, Rossaveal Harbour, and the Aran Islands without requiring a separate regional move.

  1. Connemara National ParkConnemara National Park, Letterfrack, County Galway, Ireland

Begin at the national park for the region's signature mountain-and-lake scenery. The surrounding drives are described as consistently dramatic, making this a strong first orientation stop before hiking.

  2. Killary FjordKillary Fjord, County Galway, Ireland

Take the scenic road beside Killary Fjord on the approach to Diamond Hill. The fjord is presented as one of the standout drives in the area, especially in clear weather.

  3. Diamond HillDiamond Hill, Connemara National Park, Letterfrack, County Galway, Ireland

Hike the red trail to the summit, the only route that reaches the top. It is easy to navigate and well marked, with a well-maintained path combining gravel and rocks; the final steps become steeper. The climb took about an hour, and the sunset views were a highlight. Leave sufficient daylight for the walk back.

  4. Glassilaun BeachGlassilaun Beach, County Galway, Ireland

Stop for a morning swim, coffee, and breakfast beside the beach. The water is expected to feel freezing at first even during warm weather; staying in for three or four minutes helps your legs adapt. The beach also works well as a relaxed campervan morning stop.

  5. Kylemore AbbeyKylemore Abbey, County Galway, Ireland

Take the scenic coastal drive to this 19th-century estate. The romantic origin story—built as a gift for a wife—adds context to the setting. The castle, valley, and lake can all be viewed from the car park for free; entry to the grounds and gardens was €18 per person at the time of filming. There is also a restaurant, toilets, and souvenir shop, with fudge noted as a purchase option.

  6. ClifdenClifden, County Galway, Ireland

Base the overnight portion of the trip in Clifden if you want access to evening pints while staying close to Connemara's scenic drives. It is the recommended practical base for this short regional loop.

  7. Pine IslandPine Island, Derryclare Lough, County Galway, Ireland

Make the short roadside stop and walk across the footbridge to Pine Island. No hike is required: park along the road, walk down, and use the viewpoint for the mountains of Connemara National Park in the background.

  8. Rossaveal HarbourRossaveal Harbour, County Galway, Ireland

Use the harbour as the named coastal departure point for the Aran Islands recommendation. It is a natural final stop for the route before an island excursion.

  9. Aran IslandsAran Islands, County Galway, Ireland

Extend the Connemara route with an Aran Islands visit. The supplied recommendation points to a separate island adventure, making this the optional final excursion rather than a detailed island-by-island plan.
