Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This is a one-day cruise-port plan for a DIY beach, culture, and food explorer—not a multi-day island itinerary. Treat the stops as a menu rather than trying to visit every beach: choose one beach focus, then add Philipsburg or Marigot if your time ashore allows. Use licensed taxis or reputable operators, allow for traffic near Maho and downtown Philipsburg, keep valuables secure in crowded areas and while swimming, and carry small bills for tips. Both US dollars and euros are widely accepted.

What is in this plan
Day 1 — Philipsburg, Beach Choices & the French Side
Start at Port St. Maarten and take the water taxi into Philipsburg rather than walking beside the busy road. Choose a beach according to your priorities: Maho for dramatic plane spotting, Mullet Bay or Simpson Bay for a calmer swim, or Orient Beach for a French-side beach day. Add Front Street shopping or Marigot's cafes and markets only if your port time and traffic allow. Keep a close eye on your ship's return time; the stops below are options, not a requirement to visit them all.
-
Port St. MaartenPort St. Maarten, Philipsburg, Sint Maarten
Disembark at the organized cruise port, then use the water taxi to reach Philipsburg; it is described as quick, inexpensive, and scenic. Shore-excursion booths and taxi dispatch areas are available here. For island trips, use licensed taxis or reputable operators, and allow extra time for traffic.
-
Philipsburg BoardwalkPhilipsburg Boardwalk, Philipsburg, Sint Maarten
The water taxi drops you at the Philipsburg waterfront, where the long sandy beach, loungers, bars, restaurants, and bay views are close together. This is the easiest choice for a relaxed beach stop with food and shopping nearby. Keep belongings with you while swimming.
-
Front StreetFront Street, Philipsburg, Sint Maarten
Browse the shops along Front Street while you are in Philipsburg. It pairs conveniently with the waterfront beach; keep an eye on the time if you are fitting in another beach or crossing to the French side.
-
Maho BeachMaho Beach, Sint Maarten
Choose Maho for the island's signature plane-spotting spectacle: aircraft approach close over the beach beside the runway. The jet wash can be dangerous, so heed the warning signs and keep clear of aircraft blast. It is just under a 30-minute drive from the port, but traffic can add time.
-
Mullet Bay BeachMullet Bay Beach, Sint Maarten
Choose Mullet Bay if you want a wider shoreline, clearer water, and a more classic Caribbean beach feel than the busy plane-spotting scene at Maho. Secure valuables before swimming, and allow for road traffic on the way back to port.
-
Simpson Bay BeachSimpson Bay Beach, Sint Maarten
Simpson Bay Beach is another nearby alternative to Maho for a wider shoreline, clearer water, and a calmer beach atmosphere. Pick it instead of adding another distant stop if you want more time to swim and less time in traffic.
-
Orient Bay BeachOrient Bay Beach, Saint Martin
Head to Orient Beach for a French-side beach day with chair rentals, restaurants, and beach bars along the shore. The beach can work well as a single main stop; allow enough time for the taxi journey and return to the cruise port.
-
MarigotMarigot, Saint Martin
Visit Marigot for French-side shopping, bakeries, cafes, markets, and waterfront views. Pastries, crepes, and French flavors are highlighted as reasons to make the taxi ride; combine the town with a beach stop only if your port schedule leaves enough time.
