Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This plan suits a cultural explorer who wants Almaty’s parks, Soviet-era character, markets, mountain scenery, and traditional food in a compact route. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the Golden Square, Panfilov Walking Street, Green Bazaar, and hilltop paths. Mountain conditions can change quickly, especially around Big Almaty Lake, Medeu, and Shymbulak, so carry warm layers and rain protection. Big Almaty Lake is around 2,500 meters above sea level, and access beyond the gate requires either a roughly 13-kilometer uphill walk or a special vehicle; a private tour with the necessary permits avoids that logistical issue. For local food, expect horse meat at the market and lamb-based dishes at Navat. The Kolsai Tour link is relevant for arranging the Big Almaty Lake excursion; the Navat link is useful for locating the restaurant.
