Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This route is feasible as a day trip from Tokyo, but it requires keeping to a schedule and leaves little time for aimless wandering. An overnight stay would allow more time at the Hakone Open-Air Museum, plus access to the area’s onsens and cafes. Use the Hakone Free Pass for the route’s transport; it also reduces the Open-Air Museum admission from 2000 yen to 1900 yen. Dress for changing conditions: the sightseeing cruise can be cold and windy, and Owakudani has a strong sulfur smell. Plan your food stops around the route, since the schedule can shift when you stop for lunch.

What is in this plan

Day 1: Tokyo to Hakone Art, Volcanic Valley & Lake Route

Follow the sequence from Tokyo to the museum, volcanic valley, lake cruise and shrine. The route is achievable in one day, but keep moving between stops; the museum alone can take several hours and is the place most likely to suffer from a rushed visit.

  1. Shinjuku StationShinjuku Station, Tokyo, Japan

Start with the Romance train from Shinjuku to Hakone. This is the first major transition of the day, so begin early enough to preserve time for the museum and later transport connections.

  2. Hakone Open-Air MuseumHakone Open-Air Museum, Ninotaira, Hakone, Japan

Spend as much time as the schedule allows exploring the sculpture grounds, bridges, ponds, small corners and maze. Admission was 1900 yen with the Hakone Free Pass rather than 2000 yen. The grounds are large enough to justify an overnight stay if you want to wander without watching the clock.

  3. Hakone Open-Air MuseumHakone Open-Air Museum, Ninotaira, Hakone, Japan

Take lunch at the restaurant inside the museum if hunger starts disrupting the schedule. The curry was described as spicy and especially suitable for a cooler day, making this a practical stop before continuing uphill.

  4. Hakone Tozan Cable CarHakone Tozan Cable Car, Hakone, Japan

Use the Hakone Tozan Cable Car as the first part of the climb toward the volcanic valley. The creator specifically chose the cable car and ropeway combination to make full use of the Hakone Free Pass.

  5. Hakone RopewayHakone Ropeway, Hakone, Japan

Continue by Hakone Ropeway toward Owakudani. This is the second transport leg of the volcanic-valley route and should be treated as part of the sightseeing experience rather than just a transfer.

  6. OwakudaniOwakudani, Sengokuhara, Hakone, Japan

Explore Owakudani after getting off the ropeway. Expect a very strong sulfur smell immediately on arrival. Look for Kuro Tamago, the black egg associated with the local legend that eating one adds seven years to your life; the eggs are sold in packs of four. Black curry is also offered here as an alternative lunch.

  7. Hakone Sightseeing CruiseHakone Sightseeing Cruise, Hakone, Japan

Ride the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise for a different perspective of the lake and a possible view toward Mount Fuji. Bring a warm layer: the ride can feel cold and windy, but the change of viewpoint makes it worthwhile.

  8. Hakone-jinja ShrineHakone-jinja Shrine, Motohakone, Hakone, Japan

Make a short visit to Hakone-jinja Shrine and its floating torii gate, one of the area’s most recognizable photo subjects. Allow extra time for the approach: the walk to the temple is a straight uphill section rather than a flat stroll.
