Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This is a source-faithful, culture-focused route through Kathmandu and Bhaktapur, paced around temples, living traditions, historic architecture, local food and community life. Allow extra time for monsoon rain: the journey was repeatedly interrupted by heavy storms, and Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square required more than two hours to explore fully. Pack a lightweight rain jacket, modest clothing for temples, comfortable shoes for steep palace stairs, and small cash for snacks and markets. Local guide Sandeep Kumar is specifically recommended for Kathmandu Valley interpretation and cultural context. Try the foods described along the route, including veg momos with tomato-peanut pickle, bara, potato pickle, Juju dhau and bada; ask about spice levels before ordering.

What is in this plan

Days 1-2 Kathmandu: Arrival, Swayambhu and Royal Heritage

Base yourself in Kathmandu and keep the first evening gentle after the long flight. Begin with Swayambhu and then dedicate at least two hours to Hanuman Dhoka Durbar Square and its palace buildings. Rain can arrive suddenly, so carry waterproof protection and preserve tickets if weather forces an early finish; the palace visit was continued the following day.
