Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This source-based plan gives Málaga its own day, with one full day each for Granada and Seville. Málaga’s historic center is compact and walkable; if your cruise ship docks at the Eastern Wharf and time or heat is a concern, the creator notes that the cruise-line shuttle is an option. For Granada, plan around a pre-booked, timed Alhambra entry; the creator recommends allowing at least 9–10 hours for a cruise-day visit. For Seville, the 2–3-hour train journey each way makes a long port stay or overnight much more realistic. Book Seville Cathedral and Royal Alcázar tickets in advance. The source describes these excursions as alternatives, so choose the day trip that best fits your schedule rather than trying to combine both into one day.

Itinerary highlights

What is in this plan

Day 1 — Málaga Old Town, Fortress Views and Waterfront

Keep this as a flexible walking day. Start early around the cathedral, then continue through the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba. Gibralfaro adds a steep uphill walk, so include it only if you have the time and energy. Finish with the waterfront or La Malagueta Beach, depending on your preference.

  1. Málaga Cruise PortMálaga Cruise Port, Málaga, Spain

Ships may dock near Palmeral de las Sorpresas or farther out at the Eastern Wharf, where Terminals A and B are located. From the Eastern Wharf, the walk to the old town is usually 25–30 minutes; the route is flat, and the creator notes that the cruise-line shuttle can be useful in hot weather or when time is limited.

  2. Calle Marqués de LariosCalle Marqués de Larios, Málaga, Spain

Use this elegant pedestrian street as a starting point for the old-town walk. It leads toward Plaza de la Constitución, with shops, cafés and historic-looking city façades along the way.

  3. MálagaMálaga, Spain

The street leads to this central old-town square, a convenient point to pause before continuing toward the cathedral.

  4. Málaga CathedralCatedral de la Encarnación de Málaga, Málaga, Spain

Málaga Cathedral is known as La Manquita, or “the one-armed lady,” because one tower was never completed. The creator recommends visiting early if you plan to go inside; even an exterior visit is worthwhile.

  5. Plaza del ObispoPlaza del Obispo, Málaga, Spain

This small square sits directly in front of the cathedral and is a particularly pretty place for a photo or coffee break.

  6. Museo Picasso MálagaMuseo Picasso Málaga, Málaga, Spain

This is a major cultural stop close to the cathedral. The creator found it interesting but notes that it may take around two hours and is optional if your day is short.

  7. Centro Histórico de MálagaCentro Histórico de Málaga, Málaga, Spain

Take time to wander the historic center’s streets. The creator highlights this area for its local energy, tapas, authentic souvenirs, coffee and ice cream stops.

  8. Teatro Romano de MálagaTeatro Romano de Málaga, Málaga, Spain

This first-century-BC site sits below the Alcazaba and is an easy historic stop on the walking route. The creator notes that it is free to see.

  9. Alcazaba de MálagaAlcazaba de Málaga, Málaga, Spain

Explore the 11th-century Moorish fortress for its stone walls, arches, courtyards, gardens and city views. The creator suggests allowing about 1.5–2 hours if combining it with Gibralfaro Castle; a combined ticket is usually available.

  10. Castillo de GibralfaroCastillo de Gibralfaro, Málaga, Spain

The castle rewards the uphill climb with views over Málaga, the port, marina and coastline. The walk from the Alcazaba area takes about 20 minutes and includes stairs and uneven paths. If it is hot or you prefer not to climb, the creator suggests taking a taxi up and walking down, or skipping it.

  11. El PimpiEl Pimpi, Málaga, Spain

The creator recommends this famous Málaga restaurant for lunch after exploring the old town and fortress sights; it is close to the Roman Theatre and Alcazaba.

  12. Fundación Picasso Museo Casa NatalFundación Picasso Museo Casa Natal, Plaza de la Merced, Málaga, Spain

Visit the birthplace museum or simply stop by the square if you would rather not add another museum. It is about a 10-minute walk from El Pimpi.

  13. Palmeral de las SorpresasPalmeral de las Sorpresas, Málaga, Spain

This palm-lined waterfront promenade lies between the port and city. Pause for harbor views, cafés and modern architecture before heading back toward the ship.

  14. Playa de la MalaguetaPlaya de la Malagueta, Málaga, Spain

This is the closest city beach to the cruise port and a convenient option for a relaxed afternoon. The creator notes that it has beach bars, restaurants and a long promenade, though it is not Málaga’s most spectacular beach.

  15. TrocaderoTrocadero, Málaga, Spain

The creator stopped here near the beach for a cold drink after sightseeing, making it a convenient break on a beach-side afternoon.

Day 2 — Granada and the Alhambra

Treat this as a full excursion, not a spontaneous short outing. The creator travelled from Málaga María Zambrano to Granada by train, then used taxis and a local bus within Granada. Allow at least 9–10 hours for a cruise-day visit, and organize the day around the Alhambra’s timed entry. Nasrid Palaces tickets can sell out, so book in advance.

  1. Málaga María Zambrano railway stationEstación de Málaga María Zambrano, Málaga, Spain

The creator travelled independently by train from Málaga María Zambrano to Granada. The journey is usually around 1.5–2 hours each way; check train times carefully if you need to return to a ship.

  2. AlhambraAlhambra, Granada, Spain

The Alhambra is the main reason to make this day trip: explore its palace and fortress complex, detailed Islamic architecture and views over Granada. Plan the visit around your booked entry time.

  3. GeneralifeGeneralife, Alhambra, Granada, Spain

Include these peaceful gardens as part of the Alhambra visit; the creator names them among the complex’s principal highlights.

  4. Nasrid PalacesPalacios Nazaríes, Alhambra, Granada, Spain

The creator specifically highlights the Nasrid Palaces’ detailed Islamic architecture. Entry is timed and tickets often sell out, so secure a time in advance and build the rest of your visit around it.

  5. Alcazaba of the AlhambraAlcazaba, Alhambra, Granada, Spain

The Alhambra’s Alcazaba is the fortress section of the complex and is one of the specific features the creator recommends seeing during the visit.

  6. Granada CathedralCatedral de Granada, Granada, Spain

The creator went by taxi to the cathedral area after arriving in Granada and spent about an hour exploring the city center before continuing to the Alhambra.

Day 3 — Seville’s Great Monuments

This is a long-distance day trip: the train from Málaga usually takes 2–3 hours each way, depending on the connection. The creator recommends Seville only if your schedule allows a long day or overnight stay; for a cruise stop, consider an organized excursion if independent train timing feels too tight. Reserve Cathedral and Royal Alcázar tickets ahead.

  1. Sevilla-Santa Justa railway stationSevilla-Santa Justa railway station, Seville, Spain

The creator arrived here by train from Málaga. Because the journey can take 2–3 hours each way, check the connection and return schedule before committing to the day trip.

  2. Plaza de EspañaPlaza de España, Seville, Spain

The creator took a taxi directly from Santa Justa to this landmark and spent just under an hour here before walking toward the Cathedral.

  3. La GiraldaLa Giralda, Avenida de la Constitución, Seville, Spain

The creator walked about 20 minutes from Plaza de España toward the Cathedral and booked a guided visit. Reserve ahead if you want to make this compact day-trip schedule work.

  4. La GiraldaLa Giralda, Seville, Spain

La Giralda is the Cathedral’s famous bell tower. According to the creator, access to the top is through a Cathedral visit or guided tour.

  5. Real Alcázar of SevilleReal Alcázar of Seville, Seville, Spain

Visit this royal palace for its Moorish-style architecture, courtyards, gardens and decorated rooms. The creator visited independently and recommends booking tickets in advance; the palace is also noted as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
