Saint Martin is split between Dutch Sint Maarten and French Saint Martin, but it is easy to explore on your own: English is spoken almost everywhere and U.S. dollars are widely accepted. The big variable is cruise traffic—1 or 2 ships feels relaxed, while 3 to 6 ships can make beaches, taxis, restaurants, and shopping noticeably busier—so keep a real return buffer. For the smoothest day, use the water taxi only if you are staying around Great Bay/Philipsburg; it usually runs about $7 round trip, the ride gives you a nice view of the cruise ship and coastline, and it drops you right into the beach and boardwalk area. Beaches are public, chair and umbrella rentals usually run about $20-30, and cash is still useful for taxis, chairs, and small vendors even though cards are widely accepted. Maho is the signature airplane-beach stop at Princess Juliana Airport, but it is more of an experience than a long beach day, so go early and stay away from the fence during takeoffs. Mullet Bay is the better beach near Maho, and Orient Bay is the French-side upscale beach choice with beach clubs and restaurants. If you want a bookable upgrade, the catamaran day sail adds snorkeling, paddle boarding, lunch, and open bar, caps around 30 people, and the pickup is a short walk from the pier; the small-group island tour caps around 22, picks you up right at the terminal, and covers Oyster Pond, Grand Case, Maho, and Bell's Lookout Point. If you have already done the airplane-beach stop, staying near Philipsburg or swapping in the catamaran is often the better repeat-visitor move.
