Plan notes

Useful context before you go

Lyon suits a relaxed food-and-culture traveler: avoid cramming too many attractions into one day and stay in a flatter central area near Place Bellecour or convenient public transport. Traditional bouchons generally serve lunch from about 12:00 to 14:00 and dinner from roughly 19:30 to 22:00, while many family-run restaurants and shops close on Sundays and Mondays. Reserve popular restaurants in advance, look for the official bouchon certification sticker, and say “bonjour” or “bonsoir” before asking a question or ordering. Build in time for bouchon portions, market grazing, pastries, cafés, and riverside pauses. The Lyon City Card may be worthwhile for a two-day plan because it can include public transport, the funicular, a river cruise, guided tours, and museum entry; the creators reported saving about €20 each. Comfortable shoes are important for steep Fourvière and Croix-Rousse, although the funicular avoids the hardest climb. Pack a light layer for the river cruise, a reusable water bottle, and enough room for market purchases.

Itinerary highlights

What is in this plan

Day 1 — Vieux Lyon, Fourvière & the Presqu’île

Keep this as a slow walking-and-eating day rather than a checklist. Use the funicular for Fourvière instead of turning the hill into a workout, reserve the bouchon in advance, and leave time for pastries, shopping streets, and the riverfront.

  1. Vieux LyonVieux Lyon, Lyon, France

Start in this exceptionally well-preserved Renaissance district. A guided walk helps explain its courtyards, dense historic housing, colorful façades, and hidden passageways; keep voices low because many traboules lead through residential buildings.

  2. Cathédrale Saint-Jean-BaptisteCathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Place Saint-Jean, Lyon, France

Step inside this free-to-enter cathedral while exploring Vieux Lyon. The major detail to seek is the old working astronomical clock toward the rear on the left.

  3. Fourvière FunicularFourvière Funicular, Vieux Lyon, Lyon, France

Ride the Fourvière funicular up the steep hill, especially if you are trying to preserve energy for food and neighborhood exploring. The ride takes only a few minutes and may be included with the Lyon City Card.

  4. Basilique Notre-Dame de FourvièreBasilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière, Lyon, France

Enter the basilica, which is free, then take time with its ornate interior before heading outside. The funicular drops you close to the doors, avoiding the exhausting uphill walk.

  5. Esplanade de FourvièreEsplanade de Fourvière, Lyon, France

Use the viewpoint beside the basilica for the broad Lyon skyline panorama. Benches and cafés make this a good decompression stop before descending.

  6. FistonFiston, Lyon, France

Book ahead for this traditional bouchon. The set menus are generous and regional; the meal described included bone marrow with garlic bread, Lyonnaise salad, sausage with wine sauce, calf’s cheek, tongue, mashed potatoes, blackcurrant sorbet with Marc, chocolate cake, and vanilla ice cream.

  7. Place BellecourPlace Bellecour, Lyon, France

Pause in one of Europe’s largest open squares and see the statue of Louis XIV. The red dirt surface can blow onto shoes and clothing on windy days.

  8. Rue de la RépubliqueRue de la République, Lyon, France

Follow this lively pedestrian shopping street from Place Bellecour. Look up for Haussmann-style architecture and notice the refurbished northern section with converted bus stops used as seating areas.

  9. Passage de l'ArguePassage de l'Argue, Lyon, France

Take the short detour off Rue de la République to see this historic covered arcade, described as one of France’s oldest.

  10. Fontaine BartholdiFontaine Bartholdi, Place des Terreaux, Lyon, France

Finish the peninsula stroll at this monumental fountain. Its sculptor also designed the Statue of Liberty, making it a particularly worthwhile detail to notice while exploring the street life nearby.

Day 2 — Gourmet Market, Croix-Rousse, Roman Lyon & Confluence

Start with the market while energy and appetite are high, then climb to Croix-Rousse and descend toward the southern peninsula. Reserve the Beaujolais half-day tour well in advance if you want it; otherwise, the museum provides a substantial final activity and is best given two to three hours.

  1. Les Halles de Lyon Paul BocuseLes Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, 102 Cours Lafayette, Lyon, France

Arrive early to graze through this covered gourmet market. Look for regional cheeses, cured meats, seafood, wine, pastries, and the meat platter with potatoes; the travelers reported spending about €20 for a filling selection of dishes.

  2. Île BarbeÎle Barbe, Lyon, France

Use the cruise as a calm way to learn about Lyon’s history from the water. Choose the route passing Île Barbe, which adds a less-central area to the experience; a City Card may include the cruise.

  3. Croix-RousseCroix-Rousse, Lyon, France

Explore this hill district for its residential atmosphere and the history of Lyon’s silk workers, known as the Canuts. It provides a strong contrast with the busier central districts and includes local bakeries and city views.

  4. Mur des CanutsMur des Canuts, 36 Boulevard des Canuts, Lyon, France

See this enormous realistic mural depicting Lyon’s silk-worker heritage. It is one of the district’s key visual stops and works well as a short pause between the neighborhood’s hills.

  5. Maison des CanutsMaison des Canuts, 10 Rue d'Ivry, Lyon, France

Visit this small museum for the city’s silk-weaving history. Check its timed guided-tour schedule if you want more than the self-guided visit; entry may be included with the Lyon City Card.

  6. Cour des VoracesCour des Voraces, 9 Place Colbert, Lyon, France

Find this iconic covered passageway in Croix-Rousse, recognizable for its large staircase. Residents live within the passage, so keep the visit quiet and respectful.

  7. Lugdunum – Musée et Théâtres romainsLugdunum – Musée et Théâtres romains, 17 Rue Cléberg, Lyon, France

See the ancient Roman theater just below the Fourvière basilica. The associated museum explains Roman-era daily life in Lyon, and museum entry may be included with the City Card.

  8. BeaujolaisBeaujolais, France

If you want an easy half-day beyond Lyon, book this wine-region excursion well ahead. The described tour includes transport from central Lyon, a guide, visits to two countryside wineries, and tastings; it sold out when the travelers tried to book it.

  9. Musée des ConfluencesMusée des Confluences, 86 Quai Perrache, Lyon, France

Allow two to three hours for the interactive exhibits covering nature, human history, and the history of life. The futuristic building, rooftop views, and giant Lyon sign outside make this a strong final stop; the attraction may be included with the City Card.

  10. Lyon sign at Musée des ConfluencesLyon sign, Musée des Confluences, 86 Quai Perrache, Lyon, France

Finish at the large Lyon sign outside the museum for the final photo mentioned in the visit sequence.
