Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This plan follows the recommendation to spend at least four nights in San Miguel de Allende, with a slow, food-focused pace rather than trying to rush through the city in 48 hours. Base yourself in Zona Centro for walkable access to the historic core, but choose accommodation carefully: weekends can be crowded and noisy, with parties, fireworks, ATVs, dirt bikes, hills, and rattling trucks on cobblestones. Pack supportive shoes with good grip, light layers, sun protection, and one stylish outfit; the city sits above 6,000 feet and can shift from intense midday heat to cold evenings. Use Uber when hills or slippery cobblestones become tiring. Arrange airport transportation in advance through Bajio Go rather than negotiating at the airport, and consider an eSIM for maps, translation apps, restaurant research, and rides. For dining, reserve nicer restaurants, expect dinner around 8:00 p.m. or later, and budget a 10–20% tip depending on the setting and service. Hydrate carefully during the first days because altitude can intensify alcohol.

Itinerary highlights

What is in this plan

day 1 Arrival, Jardín Allende & Centro orientation

Keep arrival day deliberately light after the long transfer from either León or Querétaro. Settle into Zona Centro, hydrate, and begin with the city’s central public spaces rather than scheduling a demanding restaurant crawl.

  1. Guanajuato International AirportGuanajuato International Airport, Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico

San Miguel has no commercial airport. If flying through León, pre-arrange the Bajio Go private car or shared shuttle so you are delivered directly to your accommodation instead of negotiating with taxi drivers.

  2. Querétaro Intercontinental AirportQuerétaro Intercontinental Airport, El Marqués, Querétaro, Mexico

Querétaro is the other practical arrival airport, roughly an hour and a half from the city center. Arrange the transfer before landing and allow for a long travel day.
