Plan notes

Useful context before you go

Dubrovnik is best suited to a focused 3–4 day visit. Base yourself in or near the Old Town for immediate access to the walls, Stradun, historic monasteries, forts, beaches, and the Old Port, while remembering that the Old Town has limited modern infrastructure and many buildings are adapted historic properties. Plan major outdoor activities for early morning or late afternoon in summer: boat tours are more comfortable then than in the bright midday heat, and kayaking is best early or late. Croatia uses the euro, English is widely spoken in tourist areas, and Croatia is in the Schengen Zone while Montenegro is not; allow extra time for immigration on the Kotor day trip. Expect Adriatic seafood such as grilled fish, octopus salad, black risotto, shrimp, prawns, cuttlefish, oysters, and mussels, along with local wine. Bring comfortable shoes for limestone streets and steps, sun protection, swimwear, and a light layer for evening boat rides. At Buža Bar, ask permission before swimming from the rocks and be cautious of currents and waves.

What is in this plan

Days 1: City Walls and the Historic Old Town

Use the first day to understand Dubrovnik on foot. Begin with the defensive walls before the heat and explore the Old Town’s principal promenade, fountains, gates, monasteries, and squares at a relaxed pace.

  1. Dubrovnik City WallsDubrovnik City Walls, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Walk the approximately 2 km circuit above the historic center for views over the rooftops, Adriatic, forts, and nearby islands. Go early or late in the day to avoid the strongest sun.

  2. StradunStradun, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Use this historic pedestrian center as your walking spine. Its polished limestone street connects Pile Gate with Luža Square and is especially atmospheric in the early morning or around sunset.

  3. Onofrio's FountainOnofrio's Fountain, Poljana Paska Miličevića, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Pause at this historic fountain while exploring the Old Town’s Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque streetscape.

  4. Franciscan MonasteryFranciscan Monastery, Poljana Paska Miličevića ಲು, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Visit the monastery within the Old Town and see its historic pharmacy, established in the 1300s and described as one of Europe’s oldest continuously operating pharmacies.

  5. Pile GatePile Gate, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Enter through this western gateway to begin or end your Stradun walk. It is one of the clearly identified access points to the historic center.

  6. Luža SquareLuža Square, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Finish the promenade at this square, the eastern endpoint of Stradun, and take in the surrounding historic buildings and bell tower area.

Day 2: Mount Srđ, Forts, and Sacred Heritage

Pair the short cable-car ride with Fort Imperial and the city panorama, then return to the Old Town for Dubrovnik’s cathedral, Dominican complex, and Sponza Palace.

  1. Dubrovnik Cable CarDubrovnik Cable Car, Ulica kralja Petra Krešimira IV, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Ride the cable car less than four minutes to approximately 400 m above the city. A round trip is described as about €30 and a one-way ride as about €17; the summit overlooks the Old Town, walls, and Adriatic islands.

  2. Mount SrđMount Srđ, Dubrovnik, Croatia

At the summit, photograph the Old Town, defensive walls, and islands from above before visiting the fort complex.

  3. Fort ImperialFort Imperial, Mount Srđ, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Explore the summit fort built by Napoleon’s French forces in the 1800s to defend Dubrovnik. Combine the visit with the elevated panorama from Mount Srđ.

  4. Fort LovrijenacFort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Visit this 37 m-high rock fort just outside the western city walls, known as the Gibraltar of Dubrovnik for its role defending the city from land and sea.

  5. Dubrovnik CathedralDubrovnik Cathedral, Kneza Damjana Jude 1, Dubrovnik, Croatia

See the Baroque cathedral completed between 1671 and 1713. Its interior includes a treasury of religious artifacts and an Assumption painting attributed to Titian.

  6. Dominican MonasteryDominican Monastery, Svetog Dominika 4, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Explore the eastern Old Town complex, which dates to the 13th century and incorporates defensive architecture with a peaceful Gothic cloister and stone arches.

  7. Sponza PalaceSponza Palace, Stradun idi, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Visit this 16th-century palace beside the Dubrovnik Bell Tower for another concentrated example of the city’s historic civic architecture.

Day 3: Lokrum, Beaches, and the Adriatic

Make this the water-focused day. Use the Old Port as your departure point, choose a morning or sunset cruise, and reserve time for Lokrum’s vegetation, peacocks, saltwater lake, and Banje Beach.

  1. Dubrovnik Old PortDubrovnik Old Port, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Arrange an early-morning or sunset boat tour rather than departing in the bright summer afternoon. Cruises can pass the city walls, forts, Old Port, and rocky coastline, with tickets arranged at the port or through accommodation.

  2. Lokrum IslandLokrum Island, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Take the ferry from the Old Port; the crossing is described as about 15 minutes. Explore this protected reserve, where roughly 90% of the island is covered in vegetation, and look for free-roaming peacocks and the small saltwater lake.

  3. Banje BeachBanje Beach, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Use this popular pebble beach as an easy swim stop close to the Old Town. Expect stones rather than fine sand, and use the water to cool down on hot days.

  4. Dubrovnik KayakingDubrovnik Kayaking, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Book a kayaking outing for early morning or late afternoon in warm weather. In winter, midday can be more suitable when conditions are better.

  5. Dubrovnik Old PortDubrovnik Old Port, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Use the port as the practical base for island-hopping departures and harbor sightseeing. It is also a calm waterfront stop with fishing boats, sightseeing vessels, and restaurants.

  6. Buža BarBuža Bar, Crijevićeva ul. 9, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Reach this unusual waterfront bar through a small opening in the southern Old Town wall. Seating can be limited at sunset; swimming from the rocks is possible, but ask permission first and watch the currents and waves.

Day 4: Elaphiti Islands, Kotor, and Adriatic Flavors

Choose between a full Elaphiti Islands outing and the Montenegro day trip according to energy and transport availability. Kotor is described as roughly a two-hour drive, but summer congestion and the Croatia–Montenegro border crossing can substantially extend the day.

  1. Elaphiti IslandsElaphiti Islands, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Take an island-hopping tour through this Dalmatian archipelago. Tours commonly provide time to walk on individual islands, swim, snorkel, and sometimes visit caves or join additional boat excursions.

  2. Bay of KotorBay of Kotor, Kotor, Montenegro

Use Kotor as the Montenegro day-trip destination. The drive is described as about two hours in clear conditions, but summer traffic and border immigration can make the journey longer because Montenegro is outside the Schengen Zone.

  3. Dubrovnik Old PortDubrovnik Old Port, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Return to the Old Port restaurants for the region’s seafood emphasis. Look for grilled fish, octopus salad, black risotto, shrimp, prawns, cuttlefish, oysters, mussels, vegetables, and local wine.

  4. Dubrovnik Old TownDubrovnik Old Town, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Use Dubrovnik Old Town as the final evening base for a slower walk through its historic stone streets. The center is strongly preserved and has little modern infrastructure, so allow extra time for steps and uneven surfaces.

  5. StradunStradun, Dubrovnik, Croatia

If the Kotor excursion is not practical, use the Old Town’s established route from Pile Gate along Stradun toward Luža Square for a final compact architecture walk.

  6. Buža BarBuža Bar, Crijevićeva ul. 9, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Keep a final drink at this cliffside bar if conditions and seating allow. Sunset is popular, so arrive with enough time to find a place and follow the swimming safety advice.
