Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This source-faithful plan follows the creator's six-part journey: an arrival night, resort settling-in, a pool and foam-party day, Montego Bay nightlife, a family-heritage visit, and a river day in Ocho Rios. For the steep Airbnb approach, bring comfortable walking shoes and luggage with sturdy wheels and handles. Arrange dependable local transportation and a safe driver for late-night outings. At RIU Palace Aquarelle, reserve specialty restaurants immediately after arrival because spaces filled quickly. Families should note that the adult foam party included soap, heavy foam, and music and entertainment that may not be child-appropriate; the resort separated adults' and children's foam pools, but adult supervision still required planning. The creator also recommends trying Jamaican KFC's Zinger sandwich, barbecue chicken, or spicy chicken rather than assuming it will taste like the United States. Street-food stops included oxtail, jerk chicken, jerk pork, soup, curry goat, roadside crab, and mangoes. Exact family residences and the unnamed roadside vendors were not turned into invented map pins.

What is in this plan

Day 1 — Arrival, KFC, and the Uphill Airbnb

The group arrived one day before the official program. Plan for a relaxed arrival evening, but allow extra time for the steep final approach to the Airbnb and keep walking shoes accessible.

  1. Sangster International AirportSangster International Airport, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Use the airport arrival as the start of the trip's local-food ritual. The group went directly for Jamaican KFC after landing.

  2. KFC Montego BayKFC, Montego Bay, Jamaica

A Jamaican KFC stop was treated as an authentic first meal. Expect potentially long lines; the group waited about an hour.

  3. KFC Montego BayKFC, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Order the Zinger sandwich, barbecue chicken, or spicy chicken for the flavors specifically recommended as different from American KFC.

  4. KFC Montego BayKFC, Montego Bay, Jamaica

The bus could not reach the Airbnb because of the steep incline. Treat the final approach as a short uphill walk rather than expecting door-to-door vehicle access.

  5. KFC Montego BayKFC, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Bring reliable luggage with sturdy wheels and handles; everyone had to pull bags up the ramp.

  6. KFC Montego BayKFC, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Use the first evening for the Airbnb views, photos, and rest rather than adding a demanding activity.

Day 2 — Check-in and Resort Welcome

Keep the first official resort day deliberately relaxed after the travel and group arrival. The welcome party, included drinks, and buffet formed the main rhythm of the day.

  1. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Transfer to the resort in Falmouth, Trelawny. The journey was described as roughly 45 minutes from the airport.

  2. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Expect welcome drinks at check-in, including both virgin and non-virgin rum punch.

  3. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Some rooms were ready before official check-in, so ask whether early room access is available when traveling with a group.

  4. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Walk around the property for the resort views before joining the group welcome gathering.

  5. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

The meet-and-greet included hors d'oeuvres and drinks and was designed to help a mixed-age group get acquainted.

  6. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Use the buffet for dinner on this recovery day. The resort's Jamaican choices were considered more accommodating than several other resorts, though not fully authentic.

Day 3 — Pools, Water Slides, and Foam Party

This is the resort's high-energy water day. Families should decide in advance whether adults or children will attend the foam party because the two pools ran simultaneously and adult supervision was a concern.

  1. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Stay on property and begin with the regular pool, where adults and children spent the morning together.

  2. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

The swim-up bar was part of the pool-day routine; plan a drink stop before returning to the main pool.

  3. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Children used the resort water slides during the water-focused afternoon.

  4. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

Add the resort beach after the pool and slides for a change of setting without leaving the property.

  5. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

The foam party began at 3:00 and used separate adult and children's pools divided by trees. Confirm supervision before joining.

  6. RIU Palace AquarelleRIU Palace Aquarelle, Falmouth, Trelawny, Jamaica

The foam was described as abundant real soap that could obstruct vision and overwhelm swimmers. Stay away from the foam machine if you want an easier exit.

Day 4 — Montego Bay Nightlife and Roadside Food

This is the trip's late-night local-social phase. Use a dependable driver, expect Pier One to be especially crowded on Friday nights, and leave room for a roadside meal after the party.

  1. Pier OnePier One, Howard Cooke Highway, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Go to Pier One for a busy local-and-tourist nightlife mix. Friday nights were described as especially packed.

  2. Pier OnePier One, Howard Cooke Highway, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Expect a mixture of music and dancing with both locals and visitors. The atmosphere was described as crowded and communal.

  3. Pier OnePier One, Howard Cooke Highway, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Arrange a safe driver for the return journey, particularly when leaving after 2:00 in the morning.

  4. Pier OnePier One, Howard Cooke Highway, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Food is available outside Pier One, but the group deliberately drove farther along the return route for a roadside local spot.

  5. KFC Montego BayKFC, Montego Bay, Jamaica

The roadside meal included Jamaican staples such as oxtail, jerk chicken, jerk pork, soup, and curry goat.

  6. Pier OnePier One, Howard Cooke Highway, Montego Bay, Jamaica

JR was specifically thanked as the group's driver. Use a trusted local driver for the Pier One outing and roadside-food return.

Day 5 — Westmoreland Family Heritage

This is the most personal and reflective phase. The route connected family histories in Darliston and Westmoreland, with a winding uphill drive and visible hurricane damage. Keep the schedule respectful and unhurried.

  1. Westmoreland ParishWestmoreland Parish, Jamaica

Travel to the family areas in Westmoreland for a personal heritage day rather than a conventional sightseeing stop.

  2. DarlistonDarliston, Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica

Visit Darliston, identified as the family origin point. The purpose is to see the neighborhood and connect children with where family came from.

  3. DarlistonDarliston, Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica

The visit included the home where one traveler grew up. Treat this as a private family-history stop, not a public attraction.

  4. Westmoreland Mountain RoadsWestmoreland Parish mountain roads, Jamaica

The route between the family areas was described as roughly 20 to 30 minutes, uphill, winding, and mountainous. Allow extra time for the drive.

  5. DarlistonDarliston, Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica

The family properties had been heavily affected by a hurricane, and one childhood home was described as no longer standing. Approach the visit with sensitivity.

  6. DarlistonDarliston, Westmoreland Parish, Jamaica

On the return route, the group stopped for roadside blue crab and mangoes. The crab was described as a Jamaican bush crab rather than the snow crab familiar in the United States.

Day 6 — Spring Paradise River Day and Resort Farewell

The final full day combines a long Ocho Rios river outing with an evening back at the resort. The river day took longer than expected because of about 45 minutes of traffic, so leave generous time for the return.

  1. Spring ParadiseSpring Paradise, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Spend the official group activity at Spring Paradise in Ocho Rios, arranged around a river visit and shared food.

  2. Spring ParadiseSpring Paradise, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Allow extra travel time: the group was delayed by approximately 45 minutes of traffic on the way to the river.

  3. Spring ParadiseSpring Paradise, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

The river meal included jerk chicken, curry chicken, fish, and other food cooked by a family member and brought for the group.

  4. Spring ParadiseSpring Paradise, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

The river water was cold, so swimming was optional. Tubes were provided for manual tubing, and staff helped younger guests learn to swim.

  5. Spring ParadiseSpring Paradise, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

A local group nearby played music and danced, offering an informal view of how locals spent a Sunday by the river.

  6. Gift Shop StopGift shop, Ocho Rios, Jamaica

Stop at a gift shop on the return for small souvenirs, shot glasses, rum, and Red Stripe-flavored items.
