Plan notes

Useful context before you go

Build the trip around both sides of Khao Sok: spend one or two nights near Khao Sok Village in a tree house or jungle bungalow, then decide between sleeping on Cheow Lan Lake or taking an early boat tour. Weekdays are the best choice for fewer local crowds. Surat Thani Airport is generally the easiest arrival point, and most minivans stop at Khao Sok Village rather than the lake. Avoid rushed one-day trips from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak. For jungle activities, arrange a local guide through your accommodation; wear shoes with secure grip, watch where you place your hands, and do not touch plants. River tubing is generally seasonal through December and costs about 500 THB, while bamboo rafting is usually available year-round. Lake raft stays are basic and can be crowded, so choose a property farther from the main boat routes when possible. Bring quick-drying clothing, swimwear, mosquito protection, a headlamp for night activities, and a dry bag for river and lake excursions.

What is in this plan

Day 1: Khao Sok Village tree houses and river

Arrive through Surat Thani if possible and stay in the village rather than rushing directly to the lake. Choose one accommodation base and use the afternoon for a gentle river-side introduction.

  1. Our Jungle HouseOur Jungle House, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

Stay among primary rainforest, with wooden bungalows and tree houses beside the river. The property also has two on-site jungle trails and a strong conservation and community focus.

A more farm-centered eco-stay beside the same river, with wooden bungalows, tropical plants, an organic garden, fruit and vegetables, and free-roaming chickens. The Gecko house is the larger option shown.

  3. Silver Cliff ResortSilver Cliff Resort, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

A simpler, quieter option beneath a limestone cliff with a small river, nature setting, fan, mosquito net, and a distinctive little wooden gym. It is presented as particularly suitable for younger backpackers.

  4. Khao Sok Paradise ResortKhao Sok Paradise Resort, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

Tree houses and unusual bungalows create a deep-jungle feeling, with monkeys in the trees and a swimming pool instead of a swimmable river. The property also offers air-conditioning and larger tree houses, though the units are close together.

  5. Sok RiverSok River, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

Day 2: River adventure and farm-to-table culture

Keep this as the active village day. Tubing is associated with the rainy season and generally runs through December; bamboo rafting is the calmer, more consistently available alternative.

  1. Khao Sok River TubingKhlong Sok River Tubing, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

Take the approximately one-hour guided river float for 500 THB. It is described as safe with guides and may offer sightings of monkeys, snakes, and other wildlife.

  2. Khao Sok Bamboo RaftingKhao Sok Bamboo Rafting, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

Choose bamboo rafting for a relaxed, safe, easy river experience with continuous forest and mountain views. It is usually available year-round.

Day 3: Guided jungle trails and night wildlife

Use a recovery-paced morning if needed, then take a guided route beyond the main trail. The narrow river-side paths are more immersive but require care; night is the strongest period for spotting jungle creatures.

  1. Khao Sok National Park HeadquartersKhao Sok National Park Headquarters, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

Start at the park headquarters for the main river trail toward waterfalls. Even the waterfalls require a guide according to the local advice, so arrange one through the accommodation.

  2. Khao Sok River Jungle TrailKhao Sok River Jungle Trail, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

Instead of staying only on the wide dirt road, follow a small single-track path beside the river where appropriate. Move slowly, watch your footing, and never touch unknown plants.

  5. Khaosok YogaKhaosok Yoga, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

  6. Khao Sok National Park HeadquartersKhao Sok National Park Headquarters, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

In high season, ask a local guide about a short-season Rafflesia hike. The world's largest flower blooms only briefly, so availability depends on timing.

  7. Khao Sok National Park HeadquartersKhao Sok National Park Headquarters, Khlong Sok, Surat Thani, Thailand

For the most immersive option, spend a night in the jungle tracking rainforest, building a shelter, sleeping in hammocks, foraging, cooking in bamboo, and learning survival skills.

Days 4-5: Cheow Lan Lake and the early-morning strategy

Stay deeper into the lake system if booking a raft to reduce daily boat traffic. The signature experience is sunrise mist, mountain scenery, and unrestricted kayaking. If staying on the lake feels too basic, sleep near the dam and take a boat from the pier at around 6–7 a.m.; this reaches the lake before most day visitors.

  1. Rajjaprabha DamRajjaprabha Dam, Ban Ta Khun, Surat Thani, Thailand

Visit the dam and stay nearby if choosing the day-tour strategy. Accommodation in this area provides a quieter base with river and mountain views before the early boat departure.

  6. Phae SaicholPhae Saichol, Cheow Lan Lake, Ban Ta Khun, Surat Thani, Thailand

  7. Panvaree ResortPanvaree Resort, Cheow Lan Lake, Ban Ta Khun, Surat Thani, Thailand
