Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This is a concentrated two-day luxury wildlife stay built around Monarto Safari Lodge and Monarto Safari Park. The experience is all-inclusive, so plan to remain on property for meals, drinks, lodge-hosted activities, and wildlife viewing rather than adding unrelated stops. Pack warm layers, a windproof outer shell, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars if you have them, and camera equipment with spare batteries and storage. Shoulder season is particularly rewarding because animals are more active outside the hottest summer conditions, although wind and cooler weather are possible. Wildlife encounters are animal-led: do not expect animals to appear on demand, and follow ranger and staff instructions around fences, vehicles, and viewing areas.

What is in this plan

Day 1 — King Tent Arrival and Lodge Wildlife

Settle into the King Tents before allowing plenty of unstructured time for wildlife viewing from the accommodation. The lodge itinerary includes canapés, an extended dinner, breakfast, and a lodge-hosted safari, so avoid scheduling external activities that would interrupt the all-inclusive experience. Winter and shoulder-season conditions can be chilly and windy in the tents.

  1. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Check into Monarto Safari Lodge and ask staff to arrange luggage transfer to the tent. The lodge is intentionally small, with approximately 20 tents and a maximum of about 40 guests, creating a quiet and private atmosphere.

  2. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Stay in King Tent 16, which overlooks the watering hole and the Wild Africa precinct. The tent has a private deck, indoor seating, air conditioning, a work area, kitchenette, minibar, coffee and tea station, binoculars, board games, and a bathroom with a wildlife-facing shower window.

  3. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Use the private deck and binoculars for a slow wildlife watch. Zebras, giraffes, ostriches, oryx, blackbuck, and other animals may approach the watering hole or pass directly in front of the tent, but sightings remain at the animals' discretion.

  4. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Take time to observe the animals from the tent rather than trying to draw them closer. The most memorable sightings included zebras play-fighting around 20 metres from the balcony and animals approaching the watering hole.

  5. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Use the lodge's in-room tablet to review the available experiences and your customized schedule. The arrival plan includes afternoon canapés, dinner, breakfast, lunch if you remain on property, and the Wild Africa Sunset Safari.

  6. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Attend the included canapés before the degustation dinner. The dinner runs for roughly two hours and consists of eight courses, with the canapés effectively adding two more small courses. Dietary substitutions were handled thoughtfully, so advise the lodge of restrictions in advance.

  7. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Enjoy the included minibar, South Australian wine, non-alcoholic options, cocktails, and phone-order room service. A zero-alcohol wine and zero-alcohol cocktails were available, showing that the lodge can accommodate guests who are not drinking.

  8. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Keep the tent warm and secure overnight. Wind can be surprisingly loud and may trigger the exterior sensor lights, so pack earplugs and use the tent flaps strategically for airflow. The bed was described as comfortable and the room spacious despite the canvas construction.

Day 2 — Park Exploration and Wild Africa Sunset Safari

Start early for the best chance of seeing active animals near the lodge, then spend the day combining the general park experience with the private lodge-hosted safari. The general park visit revealed chimpanzees and meerkats, while the private safari delivered close sightings of cheetahs, giraffes, rhinos, hippos, zebras, and other animals. Keep expectations flexible because encounters depend on animal behavior.

  1. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Begin with the included breakfast at the lodge. The breakfast spread included bacon, sausage, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes, bread, hash browns, poached eggs, Dutch pancakes, and a special juice prepared by the chef.

  2. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Watch the wildlife around the lodge early in the morning, when cooler conditions can make animals more active. The morning viewing included a cheetah, giraffes, ostriches, oryx, and blackbuck close to the accommodation.

  3. Monarto Safari ParkMonarto Safari Park, Monarto South Australia

Take the general park bus tour before the private safari if you want to see exhibits that may not be part of the lodge route. The visit lasted about an hour and included chimpanzees and meerkats, with relatively few visitors during the visit.

  4. Monarto Safari ParkMonarto Safari Park, Monarto South Australia

Consider Lion 360 as an optional lodge or park experience, but treat the encounter as wildlife-led rather than guaranteed. The experience places guests inside a dome while lions may approach for feeding; on one visit the lions did not come close and the guests were offered a refund and the opportunity to try again.

  5. Monarto Safari ParkMonarto Safari Park, Monarto South Australia

Join the lodge's privately scheduled Wild Africa Safari in an open-sided vehicle. The approximately two-hour outing produced close sightings of cheetahs feeding, giraffes, rhinos, zebras, and active hippos, making it the central wildlife experience of the stay.

  6. Monarto Safari ParkMonarto Safari Park, Monarto South Australia

Use the safari's fenced refreshment stop for drinks, food, and a break while continuing to watch the animals. The stop included seating, a sun-lounger area, a substantial platter, and close giraffe activity nearby.

  7. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Return to the lodge for sunset views with zebras near the property. The late safari delivered particularly strong activity, including playful hippos, a cheetah eating close to the vehicle, rhinos near the fence, and a baby zebra.

  8. Monarto Safari LodgeMonarto Safari Lodge, Monarto South Australia

Use remaining downtime for the lodge's fire pit, pool area, gym, and pickleball court. The private pool was closed during the visit because it had not been booked, while the fire pit and outdoor seating were highlighted as especially appealing in warmer weather.
