Plan notes
Useful context before you go
Plan this as a one-day, budget-friendly monsoon outing from Mumbai or Vasai. Carry cash because mobile network can be unavailable and UPI may be difficult. Wear shoes with good grip, especially during Shravan and July-August, and bring a rain jacket, drinking water, insect repellent, and a small towel. The temple area is inside dense forest: do not walk alone into the jungle, disturb animals, or bathe in the large waterfall beside the temple. The creator specifically recommends walking one way—ideally downhill after visiting the temple—to enjoy the smaller waterfalls, streams, greenery, and views. From Vasai station, the reported transport costs are approximately ₹40 per seat to Tungareshwar Phata, followed by about ₹150 for a direct rickshaw to the temple; a direct rickshaw from Vasai was reported at about ₹400. Shared vehicles near the temple and Baba Sitaram Temple were reported at ₹50 per seat. Parking is available near Baba Sitaram Temple and near the upper temple area. Shravan weekends and Mondays can be crowded, while weekdays offer quieter darshan. Bring flowers or puja materials from the shops outside the temple if you want to perform worship yourself.
Itinerary highlights
What is in this plan
Day 1 — Tungareshwar Temple, Forest Shrines and Monsoon Waterfalls
Use Vasai or Virar station as the arrival point and begin early if visiting during Shravan, especially on a Sunday or Monday. Take shared transport to Tungareshwar Phata, then continue by rickshaw or shared vehicle to the temple. Visit the main shrine first, continue uphill to the smaller shrines and waterfalls, and return downhill on foot if conditions are safe. Keep the large waterfall for viewing only and finish with tea or local snacks near the exit.
-
Tungareshwar TempleTungareshwar Temple, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Begin with darshan at this ancient Shiva temple. Flowers and puja materials are available from the shops outside, and visitors may perform worship with their own hands when the crowd allows. Weekdays are preferable for a quieter experience; Shravan weekends and Mondays can be very busy.
-
Tungareshwar Temple Entrance ShopsTungareshwar Temple Entrance, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Stop at the line of shops outside the temple for rudraksha items, lingam-related devotional goods, flowers, and sweets. Buy flowers here if you intend to offer puja inside.
-
Tungareshwar Temple First WaterfallFirst Waterfall near Tungareshwar Temple, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Explore the first waterfall encountered while ascending from the main temple. The route continues upward through forest, and the smaller cascades are best treated as scenic viewpoints rather than swimming spots when the monsoon flow is strong.
-
Aai Shri Khoiyar Maa TempleAai Shri Khoiyar Maa Temple, Tungareshwar, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Visit this smaller shrine on the uphill route before continuing toward Jagmata Temple. The surrounding route is forested and includes several small waterfalls during the rains.
-
Jagmata TempleJagmata Temple, Tungareshwar, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Continue up the steps to Jagmata Temple. Allow extra time for the uphill section, particularly in wet weather, and enjoy the small cascades along the approach without entering fast-moving water.
-
Baba Sitaram TempleBaba Sitaram Temple, Tungareshwar, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Use Baba Sitaram Temple as the lower access and transport reference point. Parking is available nearby, and people also walk from here toward Tungareshwar through the forested route. Shared vehicles returning toward this area were reported at ₹50 per seat.
-
Tungareshwar Mahadev StatueTungareshwar Mahadev Statue, Tungareshwar, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Do not miss the large Mahadev statue beside the temple, set among the hills. It is reached by passing near the children's garden area and provides one of the most distinctive devotional views on the visit.
-
Tungareshwar Temple WaterfallWaterfall beside Tungareshwar Temple, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
View the large waterfall immediately beside the temple, but do not bathe here. July and August can bring rapidly increasing water flow, and the location has explicit no-bathing instructions. Stay back from the edge and follow police or site warnings.
-
Tungareshwar Temple Access RoadTungareshwar Temple Access Road, Tungareshwar, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Walk the Tungareshwar access road for the return journey if the weather and trail conditions are safe. The downhill direction is easier than the climb and typically takes about one to one and a half hours, with small waterfalls, greenery, a parallel stream, and forest views along the way.
-
Tungareshwar Temple Roadside StallsRoadside stalls near Tungareshwar Temple, Vasai, Maharashtra, India
Finish near the temple exit at the small roadside stalls. Tea, coffee, vada pav, misal, thandai, and chaat were all mentioned as available options. Cash is the practical choice because network coverage can be unreliable; the creator particularly enjoyed the coffee and vada pav.
