Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This is a source-faithful, cruise-stop itinerary built around the creator’s open-air buggy road trip, beach conditions, local food, and San Miguel walk. Treat sargassum and weather as decisive: Playa San Martín and Playa Chen Río were heavily affected, while Playa San Francisco had little to no sargassum during the visit. Check current beach conditions before committing to swimming. The open-air Nissan March buggy cost about $66 per day for the vehicle, was awkward to enter, and offered little protection from rain; avoid it if mobility or accessibility is a concern. Bring water shoes for rocky waterfront areas, sun protection, rain protection, and offline map pins because cell service and Wi-Fi were unreliable on the east side. For connectivity, the supplied eSIM resource may help, but do not depend on signal in remote coastal areas. Allow a generous return buffer if visiting from a cruise ship, and confirm the taxi fare before entering; the reported ride between the port area and town was $10, although one driver initially requested $15. Sargassum is reportedly more problematic during hotter months, while a previous winter visit had clearer turquoise water.

What is in this plan

Day 1: East Coast Beaches, San Francisco, and San Miguel

Use this as a flexible cruise-port day rather than a guaranteed swim day. Begin with the quieter east coast, reassess sargassum and weather, then retreat toward the western coast and San Miguel if conditions deteriorate. Keep the final return leg short enough to protect your ship departure time.

  1. Playa San MartínPlaya San Martín, Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Start here for the quieter east-coast scenery and white sand, but inspect conditions before entering the water. The beach had uneven stairs, strong wind, extensive sargassum, an unpleasant smell, and a no-swimming sign during the visit. The previously clearer winter conditions may not apply during hotter months.

  2. Playa Chen RíoPlaya Chen Río, Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Continue along the east coast only if the road and weather remain comfortable. This beach was described as heavily covered in sargassum, with piles extending along the shore and little usable swimming space. Treat it as a conditions check and coastal viewpoint rather than a swimming stop.

  3. Cozumel Island Coastal RoadCarretera Costera Oriental, Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico

The open-air Nissan March conversion was used for the island drive and cost about $66 for the day. It was fun but difficult to enter and exit, had no doors, and offered little protection from rain. This is not a suitable rental choice for anyone with mobility concerns.

  4. Playa San Francisco public beach accessPlaya San Francisco public beach access, Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Use the mapped public access near the closed, boarded-up beach club rather than assuming every western beach entrance is free. The beach was described as unusually empty with little to no sargassum, although rain and cloud cover arrived during the visit. The supplied map pin is the most reliable access reference for this stop.

  5. KUSAM Brewery and TacosKUSAM Brewery and Tacos, San Miguel de Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Have lunch here after the beach loop. The meal included house-made nachos with refried beans, black beans, three cheeses, red salsa, and additional sauces, followed by an al pastor taco with cilantro, onions, and hot sauce. The venue brewed its own beer, including a Pilsner served in a skull mug. Earlier local taco spots were said to open later, around 6:00 p.m., which does not suit a tight cruise schedule.

  6. San Miguel de CozumelSan Miguel de Cozumel, Cozumel, Mexico

Finish with a short walk through the pedestrian streets and central town area before returning to the ship. The streets were quiet despite several cruise ships, with tourist shops, jewelry stores, Mexican flags, colorful buildings, and a visible clock tower. A 7-Eleven was also used for personal-care shopping, but no specific branch was identified, so do not rely on it as a timed stop.
