Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This source-faithful route is built around a summer self-drive from Banff to Jasper, with time for viewpoints, glacial lakes, waterfalls, wildlife and short hikes. A rental car is central to the route and allows flexible photo stops; reserve one with appropriate insurance and check current road, wildfire-smoke and attraction conditions before departure. Pack layers, a warm jumper for the Columbia Icefield, sturdy shoes with good grip, rain protection, water, snacks and a camera battery/power bank. Expect busy conditions at Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and Peyto Lake; use the mentioned shuttle, private-bus or tour arrangements rather than relying on informal parking. Keep a safe distance from wildlife, stay away from powerful waterfall edges, and follow current Parks Canada trail closures. The route is most suitable as a summer road trip; winter conditions on the Icefields Parkway can include snowstorms and whiteouts.

Walk the compact town center for historic chalet-style buildings, shops and souvenirs. Free parking is available at the train station, followed by a short walk into town.
-

Follow the river trails for a quieter walk away from the busiest town streets, then continue toward the nearby rapids.

Visit the dramatic hotel exterior before viewing the rapids below. The castle-like architecture is especially photogenic against Mount Rundle.
-
Bow River FallsBow River Falls, Banff, Alberta, Canada
A short walk from Banff leads to fast-moving water below the hotel. Treat this as rapids rather than a conventional waterfall and keep well back from the edge.
Day 3 Sunshine Village and mountain activities
Use Sunshine Village as a mountain-focused day. The gondola ride to the mountaintop lodge takes about 15 minutes, and the guided meadows walk combines wildlife awareness, flowers and geology.
-
Sunshine Mountain LodgeSunshine Mountain Lodge, Sunshine Village, Banff, Alberta, Canada
Reach the only mountaintop hotel mentioned on the route by gondola. The west-wing rooms have chairlift and summer mountain views.
-

Ride the scenic gondola to Sunshine Village and watch for mountain wildlife during the approximately 15-minute ascent.

Dine at this Canadian lodge-style pub before or after hiking. The featured choices were poutine and deep-fried pickles.
-
Sunshine MeadowsSunshine Meadows, Banff, Alberta, Canada
Join the guided walk for flowers, local nature and geology. The trail system covers about 12 kilometers, so allow time for frequent landscape and wildlife stops.
-
Sunshine Meadows ChairliftSunshine Meadows Chairlift, Sunshine Village, Banff, Alberta, Canada
Use the chairlift to ascend and walk downhill to conserve energy. Trail closures may occur when wildlife is stressed, so follow Parks Canada guidance.
-
Sunshine Lakeside TrailSunshine Lakeside Trail, Sunshine Meadows, Banff, Alberta, Canada
Walk to the lakeside section of the meadows for wildflowers, ground squirrels and broad mountain compositions.
Day 4 Lake Louise and Moraine Lake at sunset
Use a late-day wildlife tour to reduce crowds at Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. Lake Louise remains busy even in the evening; reserve transport and use the short Fairview Lookout hike for a strong elevated composition.
-
Moraine Lake RockpileMoraine Lake Rockpile, Banff National Park, Canada
Visit on a guided sunset wildlife tour because private-car access is restricted in the account described. The later timing offered fewer buses and calmer lake views.
-
Moraine Lake ShoreMoraine Lake Shore, Alberta, Canada
Arrive late enough to soften the crowds, then photograph the lake, surrounding peaks and remaining snow. Chipmunks were visible around the shore.
-
Lake Louise LakeshoreLake Louise Lakeshore, Lake Louise, Canada
Spend the evening at the iconic glacial lake. Canoes were still operating at 8 p.m., and the quieter late light is preferable to midday for photographs.
-
Fairview LookoutFairview Lookout Trail, Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Climb the approximately 1.1-kilometer steep track for the classic elevated view over Lake Louise and Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.
-
Morant's CurveMorant's Curve, Bow Valley Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Photograph the railway curve at sunset, when the Bow River, colorful sky and surrounding peaks align. A train may appear, but there is no predictable schedule.
-
Bow Valley ParkwayBow Valley Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Use the scenic drive as a wildlife-viewing section. The tour described an 85 percent wildlife sighting success rate, but keep expectations flexible and never approach animals.
Day 5 Lake Louise, Lake Agnes and Yoho National Park
Reserve transport before visiting Lake Louise. The public shuttle opens 48 hours before travel and can sell out quickly; the private bus option described provides a reserved return slot and a full day at the lake.
-
Lake Louise Park and RideLake Louise Park and Ride, Alberta, Canada
Book transport in advance rather than depending on parking. The private bus option described provided pre-booked arrival and return times.
-
Lake Louise BoathouseLake Louise Boathouse, Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
Rent a canoe for either 30 minutes or an hour. The longer slot allows time to move away from the boathouse and photograph the glacial water and surrounding peaks.
-

Use the trail to reach Lake Agnes, allowing time for a steady uphill walk. The lake shore was described as a highlight and suitable for a relaxed pause after the climb.
-

Make the short drive into Yoho National Park for the green water, lakeside lodges and an easier-paced landscape stop.
-
Natural BridgeNatural Bridge, Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada
Add this quick roadside stop while entering or leaving Emerald Lake. The natural rock bridge sits above fast, glacier-fed water.
Days 6-7 Icefields Parkway and Columbia Icefield
Treat the Icefields Parkway as a full two-day photographic drive rather than a direct transfer. The route is packed with viewpoints, glacial lakes and waterfalls. Summer is the recommended season in the source account; winter can bring whiteouts and severe snow.
-
Lake HerbertLake Herbert, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Use this as the first scenic lake stop after leaving Lake Louise. Paddleboards and dogs in life jackets were seen here, making it a useful orientation point for the parkway.
-
Bow LakeBow Lake, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Pull in for a lakeside picnic. Turn left toward the day-use area for additional parking and picnic tables instead of queueing only for the upper viewpoint.
-
Peyto LakePeyto Lake Viewpoint, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Stop at the high-elevation viewpoint for the intensely blue glacial water. It is busy with tour buses, so wait patiently for an unobstructed frame.
-
Mistaya CanyonMistaya Canyon, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Walk to the canyon overlook and keep away from the edge. The meltwater was described as exceptionally fast and powerful as it cut through the rock.
-
Parker RidgeParker Ridge Trailhead, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Hike to the ridge for high views across the Icefields Parkway. This is the route's elevated subalpine perspective and a strong place for layered mountain compositions.
-
Athabasca GlacierAthabasca Glacier, Columbia Icefield, Alberta, Canada
Walk toward the glacier viewpoint and bring a warm layer: cold wind flows down from the ice even in summer. The exposed bedrock shows marks left by glacial movement.
-
Columbia Icefield SkywalkColumbia Icefield Skywalk, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Book the ice explorer and Skywalk combination for a guided walk on the glacier followed by the glass walkway 280 meters above the valley. A shuttle and coach are required; private parking is not available at the Skywalk.
-
Sunwapta FallsSunwapta Falls, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Stop close to the parking area for the powerful cascade and bridge view. The water forms a narrow chasm and whirlpool; keep well back from the edge.
-
Athabasca FallsAthabasca Falls, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Make the short walk to the cascade and photograph the narrow gorge from the bridge. Water levels can be powerful during melt season, so remain on designated viewpoints.
Days 8-9 Jasper, Maligne Lake and Pyramid Lake
Base in Jasper for two nights. The town is walkable, has RV parking and café stops, while Maligne Lake and the Jasper SkyTram provide the final major mountain experiences. Allow extra time for the scenic drive to Maligne Lake.
-
Maligne LakeMaligne Lake, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada
Take the cruise from Jasper to Spirit Island, approximately an hour from town. The cruise includes an information-rich route, a 15-minute island-area stop and views of turquoise glacial water.
-

-
Tangle Creek FallsTangle Creek Falls, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Make this late-day waterfall stop for mist, rainbows and sunset light. The viewpoint is unusually close to extremely powerful water, so stay on the safe side of the barriers and expect spray.
