Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This is a remote, weather-exposed journey built around coastal landscapes, maritime history, Indigenous heritage, lighthouses, wildlife, and local culture. Pack waterproof layers, warm insulation, sturdy hiking footwear, and protection for wind and sudden rain. Weather can change within 10 minutes, with fog, downpours, ocean winds, snowstorms, and cool summers. Plan flexible outdoor days and confirm seasonal access before departure: iceberg viewing in Twillingate is highlighted from May to July, while Battle Harbor generally opens from mid-June to mid-September. Labrador's remote areas require careful preparation, and Torngat Mountains National Park is not presented as a casual walking destination: travel with an Inuit bear guard. At Battle Harbor, expect no cars, paved roads, street lights, or mobile-phone signal. The trip combines the island of Newfoundland with Labrador, so allow substantial time for major transfers and seasonal transport connections.
