A Scenic Rail Explorer’s Day from Nice to Tende and Sospel

Arrive before 9:00, have breakfast before boarding, and look for the Tende-bound train on platform G. The day pass pricing makes this the practical departure point for the route.

Take the 9:32 AM departure when operating in summer to receive the free guided commentary in French and English. Sit on the left side on the way up; the two-hour journey crosses more than 400 bridges and viaducts and passes through 81 tunnels.

Watch for Peillon, a hilltop village perched at 376 metres on a rocky spur above the Paillon Valley, with stone houses tightly clustered against the cliff.

Pass L'Escarène, a former staging post on the old salt road where merchants, mule trains, and travelers stopped before the climb into the mountains.

Look up toward Belvédère, another village perché suspended above the valley. It is a passing scenic viewpoint rather than a planned stop on this day.

The route enters the 5,039-metre tunnel before emerging into the greener, steeper, more enclosed Vallée de la Bévéra.

Pass Breil-sur-Roya, a village built along the historic route linking the Nice hinterland with the Po plain in Italy. Look for the onion-dome bell-tower style found in the valley’s Baroque churches.

La Brigue is a possible detour if time allows and is noted for a local sheep breed that helped make the community wealthy for centuries.

Use Tende station as the arrival point. The old village is only a few steps downhill from the station, making it practical to explore before returning for the museum and train.

Explore Tende’s old town, where layered stone houses rise in tight terraces beneath slate roofs. The medieval street plan includes parallel hillside lanes, narrow alleys, covered passages, open passages, and small squares.

Pause at a local bakery for a quick takeaway and picnic on a bench, the efficient lunch solution when the village’s restaurants would take too much time.

See the warm ochre-and-yellow tower above the village, the surviving remnant of the Lascaris counts’ castle. It was destroyed by Louis XIV’s troops in 1692 and converted into a clock tower in the nineteenth century.

Climb to the ruins of the Lascaris castle for the best view over Tende’s rooftops and the surrounding mountains.

Visit the cemetery beside the castle ruins; it is a notable viewpoint and attraction in its own right.

Enter the church for its flamboyant red-and-yellow facade, unusual lion-framed portal, thirteen statues, gilded Baroque altarpieces, and frescoes.

Stop at this free department-run museum beside the tourist office and near the station. Its plaster casts show the cattle, daggers, human figures, geometric shapes, and Sorcerer engraving associated with the Vallée des Merveilles without requiring the two-hour hike to the original site.

Use the museum visit to decide whether to return for the real carvings: guided hikes into the high-altitude valley run from June through September, with the original engravings located above 2,000 metres.

Use Sospel railway station as the afternoon arrival point. The village center is only a few minutes on foot from the station.

Walk through Sospel’s green valley setting beside the Bévéra River. The town sits just over 300 metres above sea level and feels warmer and more Mediterranean than Tende.

See the medieval toll bridge over the Bévéra, the postcard image of Sospel. It reflects the town’s historic role on the salt road, where travelers paid to cross.

Visit the cathedral built between 1641 and 1762, known for its large scale, gilded altarpieces, frescoes, and Baroque splendor.

Pause in the square in front of Saint-Michel after sightseeing and take a refreshment break before returning to the station.

Board the evening train back toward Nice just after 6:00 PM. The return follows the valleys back to the coast and completes the full-day route.
