Plan notes

Useful context before you go

Plan for two nights in the Graskop area, as this route took the creators two to three nights to explore. Their experience suggests visiting during or after the rainy season for fuller waterfalls; August, in the dry season, meant smaller falls. Viewpoints can cloud over quickly, so take advantage of clear skies when they appear. At the falls and viewpoints, expect some short walks; the Mac Mac Falls path is rocky and uneven. The video gives example entrance prices in rand, but these can change, so check current fees before setting out. The route was part of a South Africa road trip, with Kruger National Park next on their journey.

What is in this plan

day 1 Graskop approach, toboggan ride & first falls

Settle into Graskop for the two-night base described in the trip. The route includes a toboggan ride, a waterfall stop and a dinner option with game meat. A roadside animal stop at Alzu was also recommended for the drive from Johannesburg toward Kruger; it is a route-side addition, not a Panorama Route attraction.

  1. Alzu PetroportAlzu Petroport, N4, South Africa

On the drive from Johannesburg toward Kruger, stop at the Alzu petrol station for a break and a look at the animals kept behind the station, including eland, ostriches, zebra and rhinos. The rest stop has several restaurants; the creators ate at Spur, ordering a chicken avocado salad and ribs.

  2. Misty MountainMisty Mountain, Panorama Route, South Africa

Try the toboggan ride at Misty Mountain. Tickets started at about 3:15 per person in the creators’ account; confirm the current price and operating details locally.

  3. Mac Mac FallsMac Mac Falls, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Mac Mac Falls had a 50-rand entrance fee in the creators’ visit. Allow time for the rocky, uneven path to the viewing area; a man-made wooden plank bridge is at the end.

  4. Paradise View InnParadise View Inn, Graskop, South Africa

The creators stayed two nights at Paradise View Inn in Graskop. They described a king-size bed, desk, fridge, closet and a garden with expansive nature views at sunset; their quoted rate was 75 per night. Confirm the current rate and room availability.

  5. Paradise View InnParadise View Inn, Graskop, South Africa

The Garden Shed serves exotic game meat. The creators tried wildebeest skewers and ostrich; they compared the wildebeest to steak and found the ostrich meat firmer than chicken. Ask what is currently available.

day 2 northern viewpoints, canyon formations & Graskop Gorge

Allow a full day for the northern viewpoints, waterfalls and canyon stops. Viewpoints involve parking followed by a short walk. The creators reported separate entrance fees at the Three Rondavels, Blyde Canyon potholes and Berlin Falls; check current rates before visiting.

  1. Three Rondavels ViewpointThree Rondavels Viewpoint, Blyde River Canyon, South Africa

The Three Rondavels viewpoint was the creators’ furthest-north stop from town. They paid 90 rand per international adult; visibility was hazy during their visit, so the view is weather-dependent.

  2. Blyde River Canyon PotholesBlyde River Canyon Potholes, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Stop at the Blyde Canyon potholes for the canyon bridges, sculpted rock formations and expansive views. The creators reported an entrance fee of 150 rand per international adult; confirm the current charge at the entrance.

  3. Berlin FallsBerlin Falls, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Berlin Falls was one of the waterfall stops. The creators said each waterfall charged about 50 rand per international adult at the time; check current fees and water conditions.

  4. Lisbon FallsLisbon Falls, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Lisbon Falls is surrounded by mountains. The creators visited in the dry season and found the falls low; they noted that rainy-season conditions produce fuller falls. The quoted waterfall entrance fee was about 50 rand per international adult.

  5. Lisbon FallsLisbon Falls, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Divine Foods combines lunch with a viewpoint. The menu included three traditional dishes, fish curries, burgers and pizza; the creators ordered beef bobotie and pizza. Their meal for two came to about 570 rand including tip, approximately US$35 at the time.

  6. Graskop Gorge LiftGraskop Gorge Lift, Graskop, South Africa

The Graskop Gorge Lift descends 51 metres into the canyon, where the creators took a roughly 25-minute walk and enjoyed the birdsong. They quoted 190 rand for the lift plus 70 rand entrance per person; verify current fees and access.

day 3 Graskop viewpoints & final café stop

Use the final morning for the remaining viewpoints before leaving the route. God's Window and Wonder View depend heavily on cloud conditions: the creators saw God's Window clear briefly before cloud closed in, and could not see anything at Wonder View. Wonder View was identified as the free viewpoint among these stops.

  1. The Pinnacle RockThe Pinnacle Rock, Graskop, South Africa

Pinnacle Rock was the first stop after checking out of the Graskop accommodation. The creators paid 60 rand per international visitor; confirm the current entrance fee.

  2. God's WindowGod's Window, Mpumalanga, South Africa

God's Window had a 70-rand entrance fee per international visitor in the creators’ account. The visit also includes a walk through rainforest. Go when the view is clear if possible; clouds obscured it soon after the creators arrived.

  3. Wonder ViewWonder View, Mpumalanga, South Africa

Wonder View was described as the free viewpoint stop. The creators found the view fully obscured by incoming cloud, so treat visibility as weather-dependent.

  4. Paradise View InnParadise View Inn, Graskop, South Africa

Stop at Divine Meat Cafe before continuing onward. The creators enjoyed a spiced chai latte and chicken pot pie soup; pizza was also available. Their bill for two was about 330 rand.
