Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This plan follows a slow-travel approach: stay several nights in each hub rather than trying to combine Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, and Krabi in 10 days. Pack light because domestic airline baggage can double a low-cost fare, and use breathable clothing, a carry-on power bank under 20,000 mAh, sunscreen, and one outfit covering shoulders and knees for temples. Bring two payment cards, withdraw larger amounts less often, select Thai baht rather than home currency at ATMs, and keep small notes available. Set up an eSIM or tourist SIM before arrival, move two-factor authentication to an app before changing numbers, and download Grab, Bolt, InDrive, Google Maps, Google Translate, Line, ViaBus, AirVisual, RainViewer, and 12Go. Use BTS and MRT in Bangkok, ride-hailing rather than unmetered taxis, and avoid renting a motorbike unless you already hold a valid motorcycle license and international driving permit. Eat freshly cooked, high-turnover food, moderate spice with 'mai pet' or 'pet nit noi,' drink bottled water, use mosquito repellent around sunrise and sunset, and pace outdoor activities during hot months. Check the official digital arrival card process within three days before arrival, passport validity, visa conditions, and permitted-stay expiry. Temple etiquette matters: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes, keep voices low, never point with your feet, and do not touch monks. If traveling during Songkran, expect wet streets, higher prices, heavy crowds, and increased road risk; during Loy Krathong and Yi Peng, reserve accommodation months ahead. Northern routes are especially sensitive to PM2.5 from late February through early April, while Gulf islands have their wet season from October through December.

What is in this plan

Days 1-5 Bangkok and Central Thailand orientation

Use Bangkok as the main transport hub and begin with several settled days. BTS and MRT are the most reliable way to bypass traffic; river and canal boats are useful scenic alternatives. Stay near a BTS or MRT station rather than defaulting to Khao San Road, which lacks convenient public transport.

  1. Bangkok Street Food StallsBangkok, Thailand

Base yourself near a BTS or MRT station. Cross-check recent Google reviews with booking-platform reviews, especially for noise and construction, and prefer a hotel over a short-term condo rental.

Use Bangkok's BTS Skytrain for air-conditioned, predictable travel through the city and to major attractions.

See Bangkok's rooftop-bar scene once, but budget carefully: cocktails and alcohol can rival Western-city prices.

Days 6-10 Ancient capital, river history and nearby escapes

Keep these central stops as regional excursions rather than stacking every destination into a rushed transfer day. Central Thailand can easily support two weeks for a fuller experience.

Spend time among crumbling temples and towering brick stupas in the former capital of Siam.

Pattaya is brash, busy, convenient, and oriented toward adult nightlife; choose it deliberately rather than expecting a quiet beach town.

Take a songthaew as a cheap local-style transport experience in Pattaya; check the fixed route before boarding and pay the driver at the window.

Days 16-19 Pai, Chiang Rai and the northern highlands

This is the mountain phase. The Chiang Mai–Pai journey takes just under three hours through winding passes, so take motion-sickness medication if needed. Avoid compressing Pai and Chiang Rai into the same transfer day.

  1. PaiPai, Mae Hong Son, Thailand

Travel to Pai for a more hippie mountain atmosphere, riverside tubing, and canyon viewpoints. The winding road is scenic but demanding.

Days 20-24 Andaman coast and limestone islands

The Andaman side offers the country's most dramatic limestone scenery and clearest postcard water, but southern destinations carry an island price premium of roughly 30–40%. Book boat trips early and check conservation closures.

  1. Phuket Old TownPhuket Old Town, Phuket, Thailand

Use Phuket as the Andaman transport hub. Choose Patong for nightlife, Kata or Karon for a calmer resort base, and Phuket Old Town for Portuguese-influenced architecture and weekend markets.

  2. Patong BeachPatong Beach, Phuket, Thailand

Choose Patong when nightlife is the mission, but use ride-hailing and agree fares carefully because taxi and tuk-tuk hustles are particularly difficult to avoid in Phuket.

Use Kata Beach for a more relaxed resort-style stay than Patong.

Days 25-28 Gulf islands and southern nature

The Gulf islands have a distinct weather pattern, with their wet season typically falling from October through December. Samui is the most developed, Phangan is the party island, and Tao is the diving base. Treat Khao Sok as a separate nature option rather than adding another rushed island transfer.

  1. Koh SamuiKoh Samui, Surat Thani, Thailand

Use Koh Samui for the most developed and comfortable Gulf-island base, with more accommodation and services than the neighboring islands.
