Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This source-based plan follows the creator’s couple of solo days in San Francisco. Bring a light jacket for windy waterfront stops and comfortable shoes for steep hills. Keep your phone charged and mobile data available for directions; the creator highlights an eSIM as useful for solo navigation. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially around the Arsicault Bakery stop described near the Tenderloin boundary, and avoid wandering farther into an area that feels uncomfortable. Costs are approximate solo-traveler ranges and vary with lodging and meals.

What is in this plan
Day 1 — Chinatown, Lombard Street & the Waterfront
Begin with the Chinatown and Lombard Street stops, then check in before heading to the waterfront. Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Wharf are close enough to group together. Bring a light jacket: the waterfront can feel windy even on a pleasant day. Finish with a relaxed meal and, if time allows, a stop at Ghirardelli Square.
-
Chinatown, San FranciscoChinatown, San Francisco, California, USA
Allow time to wander through the neighborhood’s shops and consider Chinese food here. The creator enjoyed exploring on foot.
-
Golden Gate Fortune Cookie FactoryGolden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, San Francisco, CA
Watch the handmade fortune cookies being made in front of you; the creator notes that the factory has been operating since the 1960s.
-
Lombard StreetLombard Street, between Hyde Street and Leavenworth Street, San Francisco, CA
The steep hills make this a more demanding walk than it may look on a map. The creator stopped for a photo and noted that the flowers were not in bloom during the visit.
-
SameSun San FranciscoSameSun San Francisco, San Francisco, CA
The creator stayed in a private room at this hostel-style property and was pleased with the room space. Leave luggage here before heading back out if your room is ready.
-
Pier 39Pier 39, San Francisco, CA
Head to the sea-lion viewing area and take time to watch the animals from the public viewing spots. It can be windy by the water, so keep that light jacket handy.
-
Fisherman's WharfFisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, CA
Continue along the waterfront, where the creator looked for clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. Expect a breezy, busy visitor area.
-
Boudin BakeryBoudin Bakery, Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco, CA
The creator had clam chowder served in a sourdough bowl here, along with grilled cheese with bacon. A seat near the fireplace made for a cozy solo meal.
-
Ghirardelli SquareGhirardelli Square, San Francisco, CA
A nearby stop the creator came across while walking back toward the hotel. It is a convenient place to pause after the waterfront and enjoy the square’s setting.
Day 2 — Bakeries, Painted Ladies & the Golden Gate
This is the denser sightseeing day: leave room for rest, since the creator found the hills and the spread between stops tiring. The bridge and Palace of Fine Arts were visited on the same outing, with a rideshare used for the latter. Alcatraz and cycling across the bridge are optional alternatives rather than additions to an already full day; the creator did not do either on this visit.
-
Arsicault BakeryArsicault Bakery, San Francisco, CA
Try the blackberry almond croissant mentioned by the creator. The bakery stop was near the Tenderloin boundary, and the creator felt unsettled walking there alone; plan your approach carefully and avoid wandering farther into an area where you feel uncomfortable.
-
Painted LadiesPainted Ladies, San Francisco, CA
The Painted Ladies were a highlight for the creator, who also enjoyed the varied architecture of the surrounding neighborhood. Take time to look beyond the well-known row of houses.
-
Golden Gate BridgeGolden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA
The creator considered cycling across the bridge but chose not to on this trip. If you opt to ride, the creator had heard that some rentals include a ferry ride back, which can help avoid the uphill return; confirm the rental and ferry details before setting out.
-
Golden Gate BridgeGolden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA
The creator went to a viewpoint in the park and stayed when the skies cleared. The park is very large; do not assume the walk from one end to another is short, and allow time to reach the viewpoint.
-
Palace of Fine ArtsPalace of Fine Arts, San Francisco, CA
The creator stopped here after visiting the viewpoint and wished there had been more energy to explore it fully. Leave extra time if you want to linger rather than making this a rushed photo stop.
-
Alcatraz IslandAlcatraz Island, San Francisco, California, USA
An optional half-day visit for a future trip: the creator had long wanted to visit and had heard that the tour takes around half a day. Check tour timing and availability before planning the rest of your day around it.
