A Three-Day Jungfrau Region Basecamp from Interlaken

Take the early 35-minute train from Interlaken Ost and get off at Grindelwald Village. This is the correct station for Firstbahn; do not confuse it with Grindelwald Terminal.

Ride the Firstbahn gondola uphill and go straight to the First Cliff Walk before coffee, shops, or posed photos. The route wraps around the rock face and ends at a platform projecting 45 meters into open air; the approach is as worthwhile as the final platform.

Follow the main trail from First toward Bachalpsee. Allow roughly 1 hour 50 minutes round trip, continue past the first benches for a quieter angle, and photograph the Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn reflections before wind roughens the water. If the lake is rippled, use the mountain layers rather than waiting indefinitely for calm.

Return to First and take the First Flyer only if wind and weather permit. The 800-meter zipline reaches speeds up to 84 km/h; queues are not timed, and a suspension or long wait should not consume the only sunset opportunity.

At Schreckfeld, continue with the Mountain Cart for the 3-kilometer descent to Bort. Riders must be at least 135 cm tall; helmets are included, and the steep pitches require active braking. The cart finishes at Bort, so take the gondola from Bort back to Grindelwald village.

For a classic Swiss dinner in Interlaken, choose Restaurant Taverne for rösti. Confirm the funicular's last descent before settling in for a long meal.

Finish with the 10-minute funicular to Harder Kulm. From the platform, look between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz toward the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. In peak summer, eat early and catch sunset from the top; in October, confirm the final funicular down before dinner.

Take the early train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen. From the station, walk toward the church and Staubbach Falls rather than joining the main-road photo crowd.

Walk the free path behind the spray from May through October. Staubbach Falls drops nearly 300 meters, and the rock gallery behind the water provides a more immersive perspective than the road. Expect slippery conditions.

Walk the flat valley floor toward Stechelberg to see working farms and smaller falls that disappear from the bus. Take bus 141 farther down the valley after the walk.

Explore the ten glacier-fed waterfalls inside the mountain through cavern tunnels, stairways, and the tunnel lift. The interior is dark, wet, and loud; Trümmelbach generally operates from April into November, with weather-dependent closing dates and autumn hours given as 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Children under four and dogs are not permitted.

At the end of bus 141, board the cable car to Mürren. The ascent lifts the waterfalls to eye level and arrives on the car-free terrace at approximately 1,650 meters.

Walk through Mürren beyond the main chalet cluster, where the views open up. Carry small Swiss franc notes for self-service farm fridges and honesty boxes selling fresh alpine cheese, and choose a trailside restaurant or bakery picnic for lunch.

Take the easy downhill walk from Mürren to Gimmelwald, approximately 3 kilometers and 40 minutes, passing working farms, gardens, and porch produce stands. Explore the narrow lanes and self-service shops, then use the cable car back up. From October 19–30, 2026, the Gimmelwald–Mürren cable-car section is scheduled for maintenance, so reverse or skip this walk.

If you prefer open meadows, choose the Northface Trail above Mürren instead of the Gimmelwald loop. Build a late-afternoon buffer before dinner so you can sit quietly where the chalets clear and watch the ridge light change.

For a classic mountain dinner, choose Hotel Eiger or Hotel Alpenruhe for fondue or raclette. Check opening nights and the final train before ordering dessert.

On the return loop, take the mountain train from Mürren to Grütschalp and the cable car down to Lauterbrunnen, aiming for a window seat facing the peaks. If daylight remains, stop at Wengernalp for the Alpine Swing.

Take the early train from Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald Terminal. This time, get off at Terminal rather than Grindelwald village; it is the departure point for the Eiger Express.

Ride the Eiger Express for approximately 15 minutes to Eigergletscher. The route provides front-row views of the Eiger North Face before the Jungfrau Railway enters the mountain.

Continue by Jungfrau Railway to Europe's highest railway station. From May 1 through October 31, 2026, every traveler needs a paid seat reservation. Full-fare travelers can investigate the Good Morning Ticket, but must return by 1:17 p.m.; pass holders should use the Jungfraujoch top-up ticket with its required reservation.

Go outside to the Plateau before entering the shops or indoor attractions. This is the exposed snow-and-ice experience facing the peaks, so take slow steps, drink water, and use the warm layer, hat, and sunglasses from your day pack.

Take the lift to the Sphinx Terrace at 3,571 meters for the broad panorama over the Aletsch Glacier. Do this before clouds move through; the Sphinx is the elevated glacier viewpoint, distinct from the exposed Plateau.

Follow the indoor circuit through the ice palace. Watch your footing on the glacier ice and use the indoor route if altitude or cold winds become uncomfortable.

Continue through the Alpine Sensation exhibit after the outdoor viewpoints and ice palace. A quick bakery lunch afterward keeps the return route moving.

Descend by Jungfrau Railway to Kleine Scheidegg, then continue toward Wengen on the Wengernalp Railway. This slower route curves beneath the mountain wall and reveals the Lauterbrunnen Valley from the opposite side.

Hop off in Wengen if time allows and stroll toward the village church. The ground near the cliff edge gives a direct view down into Lauterbrunnen Valley; allow 20–30 minutes before the final train to Interlaken Ost.

Spend the final evening in Unterseen Old Town around Stadthausplatz and the church tower. Choose rösti, Älplermagronen, or Swiss veal sausage, then follow the Aare past Schallenberg on the lit streets.
