Plan notes
Useful context before you go
Mahabalipuram is also officially known as Mamallapuram. This compact UNESCO World Heritage town works well as a focused two-day stop from the Pondicherry–Chennai circuit. Expect hot conditions of roughly 33–34°C in April, with more comfortable sightseeing after about 3:30–4:00 PM. The major monuments are close together, but most sites close by 6:00 PM; plan the Shore Temple separately because it stays open later, with last entry described as around 7:30 PM. Carry water, sun protection, a hat, and comfortable footwear. The supplied guide describes a shared monument ticket costing ₹40 for adults and usable across the Shore Temple, Krishna’s Butter Ball, Pancha Rathas, and Arjuna’s Penance. For accommodation, Madras Chronicle Bay Resort & Spa offers a pool, private beach access, parking, spa, children’s play area, power backup, and vegetarian-only dining; sea-facing rooms should be requested in advance. The resort advises using the main road rather than its shorter private beach path, especially at night. Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay is a higher-cost alternative with a private-beach atmosphere and the Wharf seaside café. Keep the route compact and use a car during the hottest hours.

What is in this plan
Day 1 — ECR Arrival, Resort Check-in and Seaside Evening
Arrive via the East Coast Road from Pondicherry; the drive is described as approximately 95 km and around two and a quarter hours nonstop, although diversions and single-lane sections may slow the journey. Check in before the afternoon heat eases, then use the late afternoon for the nearby Shore Temple area and a seaside meal. The main monument cluster is compact enough to cover without repeated long transfers.
-
East Coast RoadEast Coast Road, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Use this as the principal arrival route from Pondicherry. Allow extra time for diversions and slow or single-lane sections on the Mahabalipuram–Pondicherry stretch.
-
Madras Chronicle Bay Resort & SpaMadras Chronicle Bay Resort & Spa, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Use this as the main base if you want a well-equipped stay. The property has parking, a swimming pool, spa, power backup, children’s play area, vegetarian-only dining, and access toward the sea. Request a sea-facing room early; the guide notes that these rooms can sell out.
-
Madras Chronicles RestaurantMadras Chronicles Restaurant, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Use the resort’s restaurant for vegetarian meals if convenient, but expect higher prices. The property can bring food to the room from its restaurant, and the guide notes a 10% dining discount when eating at the restaurant itself.
-
Madras Chronicle Bay Resort Private BeachMadras Chronicle Bay Resort Private Beach, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
The resort’s private beach is very close, but follow the management’s advice to use the main road rather than the shorter 300-metre internal path. The main-road route is described as roughly 800 metres and is the safer choice, particularly after dark.
-
Shore TempleShore Temple, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Begin the heritage circuit here in the late afternoon. The Shore Temple is the most significant monument in the town, stands beside the Bay of Bengal, and offers one of the strongest views toward Mahabalipuram Beach.
-
Mahabalipuram BeachMahabalipuram Beach, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Walk out toward the shoreline from the Shore Temple area for the beach view. The beach entrance is reached by walking from the main road, and the temple precinct provides the clearest elevated coastal perspective.
-
Seafood BambinoSeafood Bambino, Near Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
For an evening snack close to the Shore Temple, the guide mentions this seafood restaurant as a nearby option. It is particularly useful after the monument circuit because it is described as being close to the temple.
-
The WharfThe Wharf, Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay Mamallapuram, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
For a more private and expensive alternative, stop at the resort’s beachside café. The guide describes quiet beach access, indoor and outdoor seating, drinks and snacks, sea-facing tables, and prices beginning around ₹550 for basic items. Tandoor preparations are available after 7:00 PM.
Day 2 — Pallava Monuments, Rock Art and Resort Coastline
Start the monument circuit early enough to avoid the strongest heat, or use the late afternoon while keeping the 6:00 PM closing time in mind. The shared ₹40 adult ticket is described as valid across the principal monuments. The sites are close together, so one compact sightseeing loop is more practical than repeated driving.
-
Krishna's Butter BallKrishna's Butter Ball, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
See this 250-tonne balancing rock as part of the shared monument circuit. The guide describes it as a self-balancing granite formation that has remained in place for centuries.
-
Arjuna's PenanceArjuna's Penance, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Examine the carved granite relief and its two commonly described interpretations: Arjuna’s penance or Bhagiratha’s penance bringing the Ganges to Earth. Allow time to study the detailed figures rather than treating it as only a quick photo stop.
-
Pancha RathasPancha Rathas, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Visit the five monolithic chariots as another major Pallava-era highlight. Keep this stop within the shared monument-ticket circuit and allow enough time to inspect the different granite forms.
-
Mahabalipuram LighthouseMahabalipuram Lighthouse, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Visit the old lighthouse for a different perspective on the heritage zone. The guide specifically notes that some rooms at Madras Chronicle have lighthouse views, making this a useful nearby landmark to pair with the resort stay.
-
India Seashell MuseumIndia Seashell Museum, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Add this museum if it is open during your visit. The guide calls it one of the few shell museums in India and describes it as an especially interesting stop near the monument marketplace.
-
Shore Temple MarketShore Temple Market, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Browse the marketplace around the Shore Temple for carved-stone work, shell items, miniature Shore Temple pieces, hats, and other small souvenirs. This is the specific shopping area described around the monument entrance.
-
Mahabalipuram BeachMahabalipuram Beach, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
Return here for the coastline if you skipped the beach on arrival. The beach is reached from the Shore Temple side, and the guide describes the route as a short walk from the main road.
-
The WharfThe Wharf, Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay Mamallapuram, Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India
For a resort-focused final evening, use the Radisson property’s private-beach setting and Wharf café. The guide describes a quieter, cleaner beach atmosphere, sea-facing seating, a swimming pool, and villas beside the sea. A daily stay was described as approximately ₹12,000–₹15,000.
