Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This is a fast-paced, source-faithful two-day plan for a Rome stay before a Civitavecchia cruise. Keep the first day focused on the historic center and Ancient Rome, and the second on the Vatican and Trastevere; skip or shorten stops rather than trying to do everything. Wear comfortable shoes, start early, and in July or August carry a refillable water bottle and take breaks during the heat. Rome’s public drinking fountains are useful for refills. Book the Colosseum and Vatican Museums in advance when visiting their interiors. For the airport, the creator used the Leonardo Express from Fiumicino to Roma Termini; the video also mentions local buses and taxis as alternatives, with prices subject to change. Avoid exchanging money at the airport if possible. For the cruise transfer, allow time at Termini because trains may leave from different platforms, and check the latest train, port shuttle, ticket, and entry details before travel.

Itinerary highlights
What is in this plan
Day 1 — Historic Center and Ancient Rome
Start early and follow the historic-center route toward Ancient Rome. This is a dense walking day; in summer, take breaks and avoid lingering in exposed archaeological areas during the hottest hours. The creator’s one-day approach prioritizes exterior views of the Colosseum and Forum; allow at least three hours if you choose to tour the interiors instead.
-
Rome Fiumicino AirportRome Fiumicino Airport, Fiumicino, Italy
For arrival from Fiumicino, the creator used the non-stop Leonardo Express to Roma Termini: about 30 minutes, with tickets available at the station. The video cites an approximately €15 fare at the time of filming; verify current prices. Local buses and taxis are alternatives mentioned in the video.
-
Termini StationRoma Termini, Piazza dei Cinquecento, Rome, Italy
Roma Termini is the Leonardo Express arrival point and a convenient base for the central hotel area. If leaving for Civitavecchia from here, check the departure platform early because trains may use different platforms.
-
Hotel VirgilioHotel Virgilio, Rome, Italy
The creator stayed here and found it convenient for Termini and the historic sights. It is about a 15-minute walk from Termini; the creator also recommends considering central areas around Monti, Trevi, the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps, or Termini for a short stay.
-
Trevi FountainTrevi Fountain, Piazza di Trevi, Rome, Italy
Begin the walking route here if you can arrive early. The creator describes it as especially crowded and mentions a €2 access fee to get closer to the fountain at the time of filming; check current entry arrangements.
-
Spanish StepsSpanish Steps, Piazza di Spagna, Rome, Italy
Continue on foot to the Spanish Steps. Climb up for the views, see Trinità dei Monti at the top, and look for Bernini’s Barcaccia Fountain at the bottom. Via Condotti, the nearby shopping street, is also noted by the creator.
-
Via CondottiVia Condotti, Rome, Italy
The creator identifies Via Condotti as one of Rome’s famous shopping streets, close to the Spanish Steps.
-
Trinità dei MontiTrinità dei Monti, Rome, Italy
At the top of the Spanish Steps, the creator recommends stopping at this church and taking in the views over the square and city.
-
Fontana della BarcacciaFontana della Barcaccia, Piazza di Spagna, Rome, Italy
This fountain sits at the bottom of the Spanish Steps and is an easy extra stop while passing through Piazza di Spagna.
-
Via del CorsoVia del Corso, Rome, Italy
Follow this main shopping street toward the historic center after the Spanish Steps.
-
Villa BorgheseVilla Borghese, Rome, Italy
The creator points out this large park near Piazza del Popolo as a green break from busy streets.
-
Chiesa di Sant'Ignazio di LoyolaChiesa di Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, Rome, Italy
Make a brief stop to see the painted ceiling’s optical illusion; the creator describes this as a beautiful visit that does not take long.
-
PantheonPantheon, Piazza della Rotonda, Rome, Italy
Allow time to see the dome and central oculus. The creator cites a €6 admission price and a roughly 15-minute queue at the time of filming; online tickets are also mentioned, so check current ticket details.
-
Rome City CentrePiazza Navona, Rome, Italy
Continue to this lively square for its fountains, cafés, street artists, and atmosphere.
-
Campo de' FioriCampo de' Fiori, Rome, Italy
The creator describes this square as a daytime market location and an evening restaurant area.
-
Area Sacra di Largo ArgentinaArea Sacra di Largo Argentina, Rome, Italy
This archaeological site is the location the creator identifies with Julius Caesar’s assassination.
-
Piazza VeneziaPiazza Venezia, Rome, Italy
Walk toward this busy square and the Altare della Patria. The creator recommends going up to the monument’s terrace if time allows for city views.
-
Altare della PatriaAltare della Patria, Piazza Venezia, Rome, Italy
The creator names this large white monument as a stop at Piazza Venezia and recommends its terrace for views over Rome if you have time.
-
Piazza del CampidoglioPiazza del Campidoglio, Rome, Italy
Behind the monument, the creator recommends Capitoline Hill for a viewpoint over the Roman Forum without entering the archaeological site.
-
Roman ForumRoman Forum, Via della Salara Vecchia, Rome, Italy
The creator suggests viewing the Roman Forum from Capitoline Hill if you are keeping the day lighter. Entering the Forum and Palatine Hill involves extensive walking, uneven ground, and little shade.
-
Colosseum, RomeColosseum, Rome, Italy
If you enter, set aside substantial time: the creator recommends at least three hours for the Colosseum, Forum, and Palatine Hill together. A guided interior tour they took lasted about two and a half hours; morning is suggested, especially in summer. Book ahead and consider exterior viewing if the heat is intense.
-
Palatine HillPalatine Hill, Rome, Italy
The creator includes Palatine Hill in the combined Colosseum and Forum interior visit, noting that the terrain is uneven and exposed. It is part of the same high-effort archaeological visit, so plan for the heat and walking.
Day 2 — Vatican, Riverside Views, and Trastevere
Start with the Vatican Museums if they are a priority: reserve ahead, arrive at the ticket time, and allow three to four hours. Then visit St. Peter’s Basilica and continue toward Castel Sant’Angelo. The creator places the Orange Garden and Trastevere later in the day; classic Roman pasta dishes and gelato are suggested for eating in Rome. If this is departure day, leave enough time for the train to Civitavecchia and the onward port transfer.
-
Vatican MuseumsVatican Museums, Viale Vaticano, Vatican City
Reserve tickets in advance and arrive exactly at the time shown; the creator notes a separate line for pre-booked tickets. The museums are extensive, so allow three to four hours. If museums are not your priority, the creator suggests considering the Colosseum interior instead.
-
Sistine ChapelSistine Chapel, Vatican City
The creator highlights Michelangelo’s ceiling as a major reason to visit; it is included in the Vatican Museums visit, so allow for the museum complex’s full visit time.
-
St. Peter's SquareSt. Peter's Square, Vatican City
Entry is free, but security screening is required. The creator waited about 15 minutes; queues can be longer on other days. The basilica and square are worthwhile even if you skip the museums.
-
St. Peter's SquareSt. Peter's Square, Vatican City
The creator names the square as a worthwhile stop even without a museum visit. For the Vatican area, the video suggests Metro Line A to Ottaviano followed by an approximately 15-minute walk; it also notes that transit tickets can be bought from machines or tobacco shops, or by tapping a bank card at metro gates, one card per person.
-
Castel Sant'AngeloCastel Sant'Angelo, Lungotevere Castello, Rome, Italy
Walk toward this historic fortress after the Vatican. The creator notes its origin as Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum and suggests either visiting inside or enjoying the views from the bridge and continuing along the river.
-
Giardino degli AranciGiardino degli Aranci, Rome, Italy
If you still have energy, this garden offers one of the creator’s favorite sunset views over Rome and is suggested as an alternative to the Altare della Patria terrace.
-
TrastevereTrastevere, Rome, Italy
Finish the evening here for the narrow streets, restaurants, bars, and relaxed atmosphere. The creator recommends trying Rome’s classic pasta dishes—carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana, or gricia—and gelato. No specific restaurant is named in the source.
-
Civitavecchia railway stationCivitavecchia railway station, Civitavecchia, Italy
For the cruise transfer, the creator identifies the train from Roma Termini to Civitavecchia as the most popular option. Arrive early at Termini to confirm the platform. The creator also mentions a roughly 10-minute taxi ride from Civitavecchia station to the port, or the local port shuttle system depending on the ship’s berth; verify the correct shuttle and departure details for your sailing.
-
Port of CivitavecchiaPort of Civitavecchia, Civitavecchia, Italy
After arriving at Civitavecchia station, continue to the cruise port by taxi or the local port shuttle, depending on where the ship docks. Check the port’s current shuttle arrangements and allow time for the transfer.
