Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This is a three-day, two-night Hakone leg that fits between Tokyo and Kyoto, not a full Tokyo-to-Kyoto itinerary. The Limited Express Romancecar is a convenient option for the roughly 90-minute train journey from Tokyo. Hakone can be visited as a day trip, but an overnight stay gives you time to settle into a ryokan and unwind. Book well ahead if you want a room with a private open-air onsen: only seven rooms at the ryokan have one, and they can sell out months in advance. English may be limited at the ryokan, so a translation app such as Google Translate can help. Check current transport schedules and prices when planning. Japan-specific packing guidance and the eSIM used on the trip are available among the plan resources.

Takumino Yado YoshimatsuTakumino Yado Yoshimatsu, Hakone, Kanagawa, Japan
This traditional ryokan stay is the centerpiece of the Hakone visit. Guests are welcomed in a quiet room with matcha and, on a clear day, a view toward Mount Fuji. The room has tatami, a living and dining area, a separate shower room and a Japanese bidet toilet; staff prepare traditional futon bedding while guests are out. Yukata robes and different slippers are part of the stay, so follow the staff's guidance on which slippers to use where. Book early if you want a private open-air onsen room: only seven rooms have one. The shared onsen is a short walk from the room. Bathe nude, wash thoroug…

Amazake ChayaAmazake Chaya, Hakone, Kanagawa, Japan
A section of the Old Tokaido Road makes a scenic walk to this historic tea house. The route connected Edo and Kyoto, and cedar trees planted by the Tokugawa shogunate in 1618 still stand along parts of it. At Amazake Chaya, try warm amazake and black sesame mochi beneath the thatched roof by the fire. It is described as the only surviving Edo-era tea house on this Hakone section of the route and is still run by the same family, now in its 13th generation.

Hakone Checkpoint (Hakone Sekisho)Hakone Checkpoint (Hakone Sekisho), Hakone, Kanagawa, Japan
Visit the reconstructed checkpoint on its original Lake Ashi site to see where travel along the Tokaido was controlled during the Tokugawa era. From the lakeside, Mount Fuji may emerge from the clouds. Small shops along the waterfront are worth browsing for local finds, including the black volcanic eggs found there during the visit.
