Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This source-faithful two-week route follows the three bases used for the island: Grand Baie in the north, Blue Bay in the southeast, and Tamarin in the west. A rental car picked up at the airport provides the most freedom, but expect busy roads and difficult parking at popular beaches and towns. Bring personal snorkel gear because public-beach rentals are hard to find, check tides before entering lagoons because outgoing water can create strong rip currents, and carry plenty of water and food on hikes without refreshment stops. For Ferney Valley, start early to avoid heat; the Yellow Route is about 14 km with 400 m of elevation gain and takes 3–5 hours. For Seven Cascades, use a local guide because trails are unmarked and can have steep, slippery drop-offs. Le Morne Brabant requires dry weather, early arrival, and confident scrambling beyond the first viewpoints; the trail gate closes to new hikers at 2:30 PM. The west and south coasts are generally quieter and more nature-focused than the north and center.
