This 7-day high-altitude expedition traces the dramatic transition from the urban heights of La Paz (3,670m) down across the otherworldly white expanse of Salar de Uyuni (3,650m) and through the volcanic wilderness of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve (reaching up to 4,950m). Altitude sickness (soroche) is a genuine physical risk; allow at least 48 hours to acclimatize in La Paz before departing for Uyuni, stay hydrated, avoid overexertion early on, and consider bringing altitude medication or coca tea. Packing essentials include high-grade UV sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, heavy thermal layers for sub-zero desert nights, comfortable slip-on sandals or thick socks for salt hotels, and a swimsuit with a quick-dry towel for geothermal springs. Cash in Bolivian Bolivianos (BOB) is essential for local site admissions, hot springs, Wi-Fi fees, and public restrooms throughout remote desert crossings.
