Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This source-faithful route follows the creator's five Cambodian zones at a deliberate pace: Siem Reap and Angkor, Battambang, Phnom Penh, the Koh Rong islands, Kampot and Kep, then the eastern provinces. Cambodia is hot and humid, so pack lightweight modest clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle, a small daypack and a rain layer. For temple visits, cover shoulders and knees. Start major temple days early, take a long midday break, and avoid trying to see every monument in one visit. Download Grab in advance, link a payment card, and keep small US dollar bills or riel. Intercity buses generally take 3–7 hours and cost about $8–$15; domestic flights take roughly 45 minutes and cost about $50–$150. Motorbike rentals are around $8–$10 per day plus a deposit, but road safety is a serious concern: wear a helmet and ride only if experienced. Island speedboats from Sihanoukville take about 45 minutes and cost approximately $20–$25 round trip, but services can be less reliable from June to October. Verify prices, schedules, entry requirements and operating conditions before departure.

What is in this plan

Days 1-5: Siem Reap and Angkor Archaeological Park

Base yourself in Siem Reap. Use an Angkor Pass rather than buying from resellers; online purchase is recommended. Temple days are walking-intensive, hot and humid, so begin early, rest through the afternoon and cover only three or four major temples per day.

  1. Angkor WatSiem Reap, Cambodia

Visit at sunrise for the classic reflection across the pond, or arrive late afternoon for softer light and sunset. The complex is far larger than a single monument and includes extensive galleries, causeways and carvings.

  2. Bayon TempleBayon Temple, Angkor Thom, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

Explore the central temple inside Angkor Thom and look for its many serene stone faces. Its maze-like layout rewards a slower visit rather than a rushed photo stop.

  3. Ta ProhmTa Prohm Temple, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

Allow extra time for the parallel corridors and tree-root-covered ruins. This is one of the most atmospheric and photogenic Angkor stops, but the uneven paths require comfortable footwear.

  4. Baphuon TempleBaphuon Temple, Angkor Thom, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

Climb the steep staircases for elevated views and seek out the large reclining Buddha carving on the western side.

  5. Terrace of the ElephantsTerrace of the Elephants, Angkor Thom, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

Walk the long royal viewing platform, whose walls depict elephants, warriors and mythical creatures.

  6. Ta Keo TempleTa Keo Temple, Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia

Climb the unusually steep stairs of this unfinished sandstone pyramid for a sweeping view over the surrounding jungle.

Days 6-7: Battambang's Rural Arts and History

Spend two slower days in Battambang, a riverside city with French colonial architecture, cafes, art and countryside excursions. This is specifically presented as a two-day addition for travelers wanting a less crowded rural contrast to Angkor.

  1. Battambang Bamboo TrainBattambang Bamboo Train, Battambang, Cambodia

Take the short motorized bamboo-platform ride along the old railway tracks for a quirky view of the countryside.

  2. Phnom SampeauPhnom Sampeau, Krong Battambang, Cambodia

Visit at sunset to watch thousands of bats emerge from the cave in a dramatic stream across the evening sky.

Days 11-14: Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem
