Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This diverse cross-country adventure traverses iconic American terrains ranging from California's desert oases and Utah's fragile slot canyons to the 10,000-foot alpine elevation of the Colorado Rockies, the world-class trout waters and flow trails of Arkansas, and the subtropical waterways of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. When exploring desert canyons and dunes, always carry at least one gallon of water per person per day, sun protection, and offline GPS maps like Gaia GPS or AllTrails. For high-altitude stops like Leadville, stay well hydrated and acclimatize before strenuous exertion. In coastal and bayou wetlands, pack quick-drying layers, waterproof dry bags for electronics, and insect repellent.
