Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This source-faithful route follows the creator's stated 12-day Golden Triangle and Himalayas tour, with the optional four-day Shimla extension included. Plan for October to March when temperatures are lower. Arrange the official Indian tourist visa directly through the official government site, and consider hepatitis A, typhoid and tetanus vaccinations plus malaria advice from a travel-health professional. India uses a closed currency: exchange money or withdraw rupees on arrival at New Delhi airport. Carry hand sanitizer, be cautious with street food and frequently touched surfaces, and keep mobile data active for maps and family contact; an India-compatible eSIM can be arranged before arrival. Pack modest clothing for religious sites, slip-on shoes or bathroom slippers for mosques and temples, a small daypack for the Shimla extension, layers for cooler Himalayan weather, and comfortable footwear for uneven forts and the 4–5 km Shimla hike. For the toy train, send luggage ahead or store it and travel with only a backpack; there is limited luggage space, a roughly six-hour journey and only one main rest stop. The route is best suited to a culturally curious heritage traveler who enjoys guided sightseeing, historic architecture, wildlife and scenic rail travel.
