Travel inspiration behind this plan

Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This flexible companion follows the port sequence from Kobe to Osaka: a Kyoto excursion from each port, followed by independent time in Osaka. For a more relaxed Kyoto visit, consider the creator’s alternative: take the bullet train, stay near Yasaka Pagoda, and use a two-day public-transport sightseeing pass. They estimated this would be about 30% cheaper, including meals and drinks; that is a comparison from their trip, not a guaranteed saving. Check current train, metro, pass, and port schedules, and leave a buffer to return to the ship. Prices and schedules can change.

What is in this plan

Day 1: Kobe port to Kyoto’s temples and Gion

The Celebrity excursion cost £152 per person. It included a traditional Japanese lunch at a hotel in northwest Kyoto and time in its gift shop, adding cross-city travel before the main sights. The tour also visited Higashiyama Jisho-ji (Ginkaku-ji), noted for its carefully maintained gardens. Traffic and delays left only 20 minutes at Fushimi Inari Taisha; after a complaint, the creators received a 20% refund. Check how much time a tour allocates to each stop and how much is spent transferring.…

  1. Maruyama ParkMaruyama Park, Kyoto, Japan

The tour stopped here before the Gion walk. It was one of several Kyoto sights visited on a tightly scheduled day.

  2. Chion-inChion-in, Kyoto, Japan

Chion-in was among the Buddhist temples seen during the walk through the Gion area.

  3. Yasaka ShrineYasaka Shrine, Kyoto, Japan

Yasaka Shrine was one of the religious sites seen during the Gion-area walk.

  4. Kennin-jiKennin-ji, Kyoto, Japan

Kennin-ji was another temple named among the sights on the Gion-area walk.

  5. Hokan-ji Temple (Yasaka Pagoda)Hokan-ji Temple, Kyoto, Japan

Also known as Yasaka Pagoda, Hokan-ji was one of the landmarks seen during the Gion-area walk. The creators suggested staying nearby for a more relaxed, independent Kyoto visit.

  6. Fushimi Inari TaishaFushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto, Japan

More than 10,000 torii gates line a roughly 5 km pathway. Allow two to three hours to explore; the delayed guided excursion gave the creators only 20 minutes.

Day 2: Osaka port excursion to Kyoto

The ship moved from Kobe to Osaka before this guided Kyoto tour, which cost around £150 per person. The group saw cherry blossoms along a riverbank on the way to Heian-jingu and had 50 minutes to explore the shrine. Lunch was a Japanese banquet near Tenryu-ji; the creators enjoyed it, though some in the group were less keen on the flavours and textures. The coach passed Kyoto Imperial Palace, within Kyoto National Garden, on the way to lunch; it was not a stop. The tour allowed 45 minutes at th…

  1. Heian-jingu ShrineHeian-jingu Shrine, Kyoto, Japan

The shrine’s towering red torii gate and well-kept grounds stood out. The group had 50 minutes to explore independently.

  2. Tenryu-jiTenryu-ji, Kyoto, Japan

The group visited the temple and gardens after lunch nearby. The Japanese banquet was delicious to the creators, although its flavours and textures did not suit everyone in the group.

  3. Arashiyama Bamboo GroveArashiyama Bamboo Grove, Kyoto, Japan

The group entered the bamboo forest after Tenryu-ji and had 45 minutes to explore the path and nearby shops before returning to the coach. Allow more time for a less hurried visit.

Day 3: Osaka Castle and Dotonbori

The creators left the ship at 8:30, walked about 400 metres, and took the metro to Osaka Castle. They continued by metro to Dotonbori and returned to the ship by 2 pm for a 3 pm sailing. Check your port’s departure time and leave enough time for the return journey.

  1. Osaka CastleOsaka Castle, Osaka, Japan

The grounds impressed the creators. They note that the present castle is a concrete reconstruction of the original, with a museum inside. They reached it by metro after a short walk from the ship.

  2. DotonboriDotonbori, Osaka, Japan

The neon signs and animated billboards make Dotonbori a vivid, sensory-overload stop. The creators continued here by metro after Osaka Castle.

  3. Kobe Beef Wanomiya DotonboriKobe Beef Wanomiya Dotonbori, Osaka, Japan

This Dotonbori teppanyaki grill served Kobe beef for about £25 per person. The creators praised the tender beef and the chef’s explanations during the meal; the wasabi was notably strong. That price reflects their visit, not a current menu price.
