Plan notes
Useful context before you go
A flexible two-day suggestion for exploring the 52-mile Steens Mountain Backcountry Byway, not a reconstruction of a fixed daily schedule. The route climbs from high desert to about 9,700 feet and includes dispersed camping, lake scenery and hiking. Stock up on fuel and groceries in Burns before heading into the remote area; French Glen has limited services and is not a reliable resupply stop. Allow extra time if you plan to hike down to Wildhorse Lake, and check current road and access information before setting out.

What is in this plan
Days 1–2: French Glen, the Steens loop and Riddle Brothers Ranch
The byway is a 52-mile scenic loop from high desert toward the Steens Mountain summit at about 9,700 feet. French Glen is the northern gateway, but its limited services make Burns the better place to stock up on fuel and groceries. Fish Lake is a lakeside stop for a quick lunch, boating or campground access; the route also passes the Kiger Gorge overlook and hiking trails near the summit. Dispersed camping and a camp-cooked dinner are part of the remote-route experience. At the Riddle Brothers…

French Glen HotelFrench Glen Hotel, Frenchglen, Oregon
The historic French Glen Hotel offers rooms and a public restaurant. French Glen is a small gateway community with limited services, so do not rely on it for fuel or groceries. The creator found no room vacancy during this visit; check availability before counting on an overnight stay.
-
Fish Lake CampgroundFish Lake Campground, Oregon
Fish Lake is a scenic break beside the route, with a campground and opportunities to boat. It also made a convenient place for a quick lunch; fall foliage was beginning to show around the lake during this visit.
-
Kiger Gorge OverlookKiger Gorge Overlook, Steens Mountain, Oregon
Stop at the overlook to see the deep channels glaciers carved into Steens Mountain during the Ice Age.
-
Steens Mountain Summit TrailSteens Mountain Summit Trailhead, Oregon
The summit trail leads to the top of Mount Steens. The summit area also has telecommunications towers and research equipment alongside the mountain setting.
-
Wildhorse LakeWildhorse Lake, Steens Mountain, Oregon
The trail descends about 1,200 feet to the lake, then climbs that elevation back up. It is a short but steep and strenuous 2.5-mile round trip. The creator skipped the descent because time was limited, so allow enough time if you plan to hike it.

Riddle Brothers RanchRiddle Brothers Ranch National Historic District, Oregon
Explore the preserved ranch grounds, including the cabin, kitchen, barn, tools and blacksmith shop. The early-1900s operation began with mules, sheep and horses sold to the U.S. Cavalry; after World War I, the brothers shifted to cattle. Visitors can look through many items and open cabinetry, though the upstairs of one building is closed.
