Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This is a scenic road-trip and motorhome itinerary covering approximately 231 km from Lake Louise to Jasper. Treat it as an all-day drive rather than a simple transfer: the route is packed with viewpoints, lakes, glaciers, canyons, and waterfalls, and frequent stops are part of the experience. Summer is the recommended season; winter conditions can bring snow, stormy weather, and complete whiteouts. A larger vehicle can fit in several of the substantial roadside parking areas, but arrive early at busy viewpoints. Pack a warm jumper even in summer, especially for the glacier walk, and bring a picnic for the lakeside day-use areas. At Bow Lake, paddleboards are not permitted to protect the water from bacterial cross-contamination. Keep well away from the edges of fast-moving water at Mistaya Canyon, Sunwapta Falls, and Athabasca Falls.

What is in this plan
day 1 Lake Louise to Jasper: the Icefields Parkway
Drive north from Lake Louise toward Jasper and plan for a full day on the road. The route is exceptionally dense with scenic stops, so do not schedule the Columbia Icefield experience as a rushed add-on to the transfer. Allow extra time for parking, short walks, photographs, and the glacier's chilly conditions.
-
Lake Louise LakeshoreLake Louise Lakeshore, Lake Louise, Canada
Begin the northbound drive here. This is the entry point to the route, with roughly 2.5 hours of scenic road immediately ahead before the first major stops.
-
Herbert LakeHerbert Lake, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Make the first roadside stop at this small lake, where paddleboards, dogs in life jackets, and the first mountain views establish the scenery immediately.
-
Crowfoot Glacier ViewpointCrowfoot Glacier Viewpoint, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Pull over for the glacier view and panoramic snow-capped mountain scenery. The roadside parking areas can accommodate larger vehicles, including motorhomes.
-
Bow LakeBow Lake, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Use the left turn toward the short path and day-use area if the upper viewing-point parking queue is long. The lower area has parking and picnic space, making this the recommended lunch stop. Do not paddleboard here; the lake is protected from watercraft to prevent bacterial cross-contamination.
-
Bow Glacier FallsBow Glacier Falls Trailhead, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Take the hike toward the falls if time and energy allow; the route is 4.6 km one way. The falls come from glacier melt and offer a closer look at the changing summer landscape.
-
Peyto Lake ViewpointPeyto Lake Viewpoint, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Stop at the elevated viewing platform for the intense blue glacial water and broad subalpine panorama. It is a busy viewpoint, so wait for a clear opening rather than expecting uninterrupted space for photographs.
-
Waterfowl LakesWaterfowl Lakes Campground, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Pull in for the pair of blue glacial lakes. The campsite is described as first come, first served, and vehicles can park close to the water, making this a useful alternative picnic stop.
-
Mistaya CanyonMistaya Canyon, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Walk to the canyon viewpoints and keep well back from the edge. The meltwater is extremely fast and powerful as it cuts through the rock.
-
Howse Pass ViewpointHowse Pass Viewpoint, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Take the viewpoint stop for the river threading through the valley and the elevated perspective over the road. It is one of the many short scenic pullovers that make this route take all day.
-
Parker Ridge TrailheadParker Ridge Trailhead, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Use this high-elevation stop for a closer approach to the snow and expansive mountain views. The route continues climbing from the valley floor, so allow time for another photography pause.
-
Columbia Icefield Visitor CentreColumbia Icefield Discovery Centre, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Treat the Columbia Icefield as a separate experience rather than rushing it during the transfer to Jasper. The glacier area is a major highlight and deserves enough time for the walk and landscape.
-
Athabasca Glacier ToeAthabasca Glacier Trail, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Turn left just before the visitor centre when traveling north; the glacier walk is hidden and not signposted from that direction. Follow the short walk toward the toe, read the markers showing the glacier's historical extent, and bring a warm jumper because cold air flows down from the ice.
-
Sunwapta FallsSunwapta Falls, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Make the short walk from the parking area to the falls; the bridge is only about 0.1 km away. Stay cautious around the extremely powerful water and narrow chasm.
-
Goats and Glacier ViewpointGoats and Glacier Viewpoint, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Stop at the viewpoint near dusk for the chance of seeing goats and other animals becoming active. A deer was seen near the road, so stay alert while driving during the evening light.
-
Athabasca FallsAthabasca Falls, Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
Use this as the final major waterfall stop before Jasper, especially in afternoon or sunset light when the mist glows. The viewpoint is very close to the powerful water, so expect spray and keep a dry jumper available.
-
Town of JasperJasper, AB, Canada
Finish the northbound drive here after a long day of stops. The route's endpoint is reached late because the scenery repeatedly invites additional pullovers.
