Plan notes
Useful context before you go
This is a demanding, high-altitude pilgrimage rather than a conventional sightseeing trip. The source-faithful route is an 11-night/12-day circuit from Haridwar through Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath, ending in Rishikesh. Complete the mandatory Char Dham registration online or at registration centers in Haridwar or Rishikesh, and keep a mobile and printed copy available because registration may be checked at each dham. Start road and walking days early: mountain weather can worsen after midday, with rain possible in the afternoon. Carry only essential items during the Yamunotri and Kedarnath treks and leave excess luggage at your hotel. Prepare for a 6 km Yamunotri trek and a current 21 km Kedarnath trek from Gaurikund; horse, palki, pitthu and helicopter alternatives are available, subject to current availability and official pricing. Kedarnath helicopter services can be booked from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi, while VIP darshan and special puja should be reserved in advance. Use layered clothing, waterproof footwear, rain protection, a small daypack, water, snacks, personal medicines, trekking poles and power banks. Verify current temple opening dates, registration rules, weather, road conditions, accommodation, helicopter operations and prices before departure. The supplied guide estimates approximately ₹30,500 per person for a self-planned journey, while a package may be more practical during peak season because hotel bookings can be cancelled when better offline rates appear.
