Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This is a source-faithful, car-based route through the Dominican Republic, following the creator's three-week journey from Punta Cana through Samaná, Puerto Plata, Monte Cristi, Baní, Barahona, Pedernales, Santo Domingo, and back toward Punta Cana. Rent a car for the main route; the drive from Punta Cana toward Samaná is about 300 km and roughly five hours, with roads differing considerably from European standards. Keep plans flexible around heat, rain, rural road conditions, and boat departures. For Bahia de las Aguilas, a four-wheel-drive route or boat access is required. January through March is the source-mentioned whale-watching season in Samaná. Pack breathable clothing, sun protection, sturdy footwear for jungle and dune walks, swimwear, insect repellent, and cash for local boats and small-town meals. Drive slowly around rhinoceros iguanas near Baní and avoid flying a drone near people, wildlife, airports, or protected areas without checking current permissions.
