Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This is a slow-moving, multi-island Indonesia route for an active tropical traveler who wants exceptional snorkeling, uncrowded beaches, local culture, scooter road trips, and honest contrasts between polished Bali and quieter islands. Pack reef-safe sunscreen, rash guards, dry bags, water shoes, a mask or well-fitting snorkel, insect repellent, a light rain layer, modest clothing and a sarong for temples, and offline maps. Never touch coral or turtles, and use licensed boat operators inside protected areas. Confirm ferry schedules shortly before departure, especially for Karimunjawa and the Gili Islands. Carry Indonesian rupiah because rural beaches, small islands, parking areas, and local shops may not accept cards. For Sumba, travel with a trusted local guide, agree on village and beach fees before stopping, avoid displaying cash, and leave immediately if a confrontation develops. The route follows the source-backed stays of five nights in Karimunjawa, three days in Canggu, five days in Ubud, four days around Menjangan, five days in the Gilis, five days in Kuta Lombok, and five days in West Sumba. Snorkeling gear is widely available, but bringing your own mask improves comfort; use a flotation aid if you are not a confident swimmer.

What is in this plan

days 1-5 Karimunjawa: remote water bungalow escape

Use Jepara as the overnight ferry gateway. Restaurants close early and alcohol can be difficult to find, so buy essentials and confirm dinner plans before sunset. Five nights gives enough time to enjoy the island without rushing.

  1. Jepara HarborJepara Harbor, Jepara, Indonesia

Stay overnight near the harbor before the early crossing; the simple homestay experience and friendly owners make this a practical buffer against ferry delays.

  2. Jepara HarborJepara Harbor, Jepara, Indonesia

Take the fast ferry from Jepara; the reported fare is IDR 150,000–200,000. Recheck the sailing calendar because weather can affect remote-island service.

days 6-8 Canggu: beginner surf and beach-town energy

Stay three nights around Canggu. Berawa is scenic but has larger waves and rip currents; use Batu Bolong for a first lesson. Finns is loud and expensive, so treat it as an optional sunset spectacle rather than a relaxed family stop.

days 28-32 West Sumba: rural culture and careful road travel

Dedicate five days to West Sumba with a trusted local guide and a pre-agreed transport plan. Rural visits can be fascinating but socially intense; ask permission before photographing people, carry modest cash, and do not accept unclear parking or donation demands. A scooter such as an NMAX was reported at about IDR 400,000 per day, but a car and guide are safer for remote routes.
