Tioman Island's Remote Jungle-and-Reef Escape

Reach Tioman Island after the approximately 2.5-hour bus from Johor Bahru and approximately 2-hour ferry. Keep the first afternoon unhurried because the journey uses much of the day.

Check into Cahaya Tioman Resort, the remote base used for this stay. The resort has villas and chalets, an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, on-site food, and direct access to the surrounding water and jungle.

Walk from the resort to Asah Waterfall while daylight remains. The route reaches a tiered waterfall surrounded by dense jungle and pools; the climb to the top took approximately 15 minutes.

Cool off in the private pools fed by the waterfall. Access is reached from the resort by a private walking section and steps down toward the water.

Have dinner in the resort's communal restaurant and ask the chef for a favorite dish. The meal highlighted here also included nasi goreng.

Start the following morning with the resort buffet breakfast, including tea, coffee, cereal, fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, and sausages.

Snorkel directly from the resort pier. The water can be choppy or murky after storms, but the site contains coral and blacktip reef sharks; calmer, sunnier conditions improved visibility.

Look for the blacktip reef shark encountered during the resort-reef snorkel. Maintain distance and avoid chasing wildlife, particularly when visibility is reduced.

Take a kayak out from the resort and paddle along the untouched coast. Bring the oars before launching; the route can be bumpy in choppy conditions and offers views of green forest, mountains, and coastline.

Pause at the reef structures described as bommies. The protected water supports fish and clearer snorkeling than the area directly in front of the resort.

Have lunch back at the resort restaurant. The meal featured chicken fried rice and a beef burger, with the chef preparing food overlooking the water.

Finish the day with the resort's giant swing and ocean views. This is a low-key stop after a full day in the water, with the Dragon's Horns visible when conditions clear.

If clouds and rain are building, postpone the hike and take cover; tropical weather can change rapidly and then clear just as quickly. The hike was temporarily cancelled during a sudden storm.

Begin the Dragon's Horns route through the village access point. The route was described as approximately 4 km from the accommodation with about 650 m of elevation gain; a 50-ringgit payment may be requested at the entrance.

Expect a rough, humid route with boulders, foliage, ropes, and indistinct sections rather than a polished footpath. The route includes checkpoints and was signposted as taking up to four hours to reach the top.

Reach the Dragon's Horns viewpoint for the famous twin peaks and broad views over untouched coastline. Take a proper break at the top; the climb was hot and strenuous, but the breeze provided natural cooling.

Return carefully from the viewpoint and allow extra time for the descent. The route down was described as steep and slippery, with falls, a twisted ankle, monkeys calling nearby, and a bat encounter.

Take a sunset kayak date along the resort coast when the sea is glassy and the tide is suitable. The low tide revealed coral, while the Dragon's Horns formed the backdrop as the sun went down.

End the stay with the resort buffet: rice, chicken, fish, curry, pumpkin curry, mixed vegetables, squid, fruit, dessert, and soup were all mentioned. Butter chicken was particularly praised.

Join the informal evening game and karaoke at the resort if energy allows. The evening included staff and guests playing together with ringgit stakes, followed by approximately three hours of karaoke.
