Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This source-faithful two-day plan follows a first-time Venice route: major historic sights on day one, then Murano, Burano, and the local Cannaregio neighborhood on day two. If arriving by train, use Santa Lucia station; airport buses and taxis arrive at Piazzale Roma. Vaporetto rides cost €9.50 individually, while 24-, 48-, and 72-hour passes cost €25, €35, and €45. The pass begins when first used, but validate it before boarding every ride; fines for unvalidated tickets range from €90 to €180. Use Citymapper or Google Maps in transit mode, and allow extra time because boats take longer than expected. Overnight visitors do not pay the Venice access fee, but must register and carry the accommodation QR code and confirmation. Day trippers on selected peak days must pay the fee and obtain a QR code; paying at least four days ahead can reduce it from €10 to €5. The gondola alternative is a one-minute traghetto crossing for €2 rather than a full private gondola ride. For the itinerary, carry comfortable walking shoes, a small day bag, and secure belongings carefully in crowded areas.

What is in this plan

Day 1: San Marco, Venetian Power & the Grand Canal

Start early in Piazza San Marco, ideally around 7–8 a.m., to reduce crowds. Group the Basilica, Campanile, Doge's Palace, Rialto, and nearby canal sights into one historic center day. Allow at least 90 minutes for Doge's Palace, longer if taking a special tour, and keep valuables secure around Rialto.

  1. Piazza San MarcoPiazza San Marco, Venice, Italy

Begin here around 7–8 a.m. for the best chance of seeing the square before it fills. This was Venice's civic, religious, and political stage, so pause to take in the surrounding architecture before entering the Basilica.

  2. St Mark's BasilicaSt Mark's Basilica, Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy

Look for the onion-shaped domes, gold mosaics, and Byzantine influence. The winged lion of Saint Mark appears throughout Venice, and the saint's body is said to rest beneath the altar.

  3. St Mark's CampanileSt Mark's Campanile, Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy

The elevator avoids the 300 stairs. A return visit to the top costs €10 and provides a broad view over Venice; skip it if fog obscures the skyline.

  4. Palazzo DucalePalazzo Ducale, Piazza San Marco, Venice, Italy

Allow at least 90 minutes for the main palace rooms. The €35 basic ticket includes the opulent government rooms, the Great Council Chamber, Tintoretto's Paradiso, the justice rooms, prisons, and Bridge of Sighs. Special tours cost €40 and take longer.

  5. Rialto BridgeRialto Bridge, Venice, Italy

Cross the bridge for views down the Grand Canal, but expect heavy crowds and watch belongings carefully because pickpockets may operate here. The nearby markets are most atmospheric early in the morning.

  6. Traghetto Santa SofiaSanta Sofia Traghetto, Venice, Italy

Use a traghetto for a one-minute gondola crossing where no bridge is nearby. The fare is €2, offering a small gondola experience without the cost of a private ride.

  7. Cantina Do SpadeCantina Do Spade, San Polo, Venice, Italy

Visit around 6 p.m. for the Venetian aperitivo ritual: order cicchetti, small bites generally costing €1–€4 each, with a spritz at a local wine bar.

Day 2: Grand Canal Art, Murano, Burano & Cannaregio

Take the fastest island route from Fondamente Nove using vaporetto lines 4.1, 4.2, or 12. Murano takes about 15–20 minutes; use the same pass for both islands. Continue to Burano, reserve lunch in advance, then finish in Cannaregio with cicchetti, dinner, and the historic Jewish Ghetto.

  1. Peggy Guggenheim CollectionPeggy Guggenheim Collection, Dorsoduro, Venice, Italy

This palazzo houses Peggy Guggenheim's modern art collection, including works associated with Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Jackson Pollock, Picasso, René Magritte, and Salvador Dalí. Allow time to explore the collection rather than rushing through.

  2. Basilica of Santa Maria della SaluteBasilica of Santa Maria della Salute, Dorsoduro 1, Venice, Italy

This free church was built after the 1630 plague and is especially striking from the Grand Canal. The adjacent museum costs €6 and contains paintings by Titian.

  3. Accademia BridgePonte dell'Accademia, Venice, Italy

Follow signs to this wooden bridge for views back toward Santa Maria della Salute and along the Grand Canal. It replaced an earlier steel bridge.

  4. Palazzo Grimani di Santa Maria FormosaPalazzo Grimani di Santa Maria Formosa, Venice, Italy

Spend 30–60 minutes exploring the Renaissance home of the wealthy Grimani family. Look for the Tribuna and pay special attention to the frescoes, inlay, and elaborate ceilings; it is often much quieter than the main sights.

  5. Fondamente Nove Vaporetto StopFondamente Nove Vaporetto Stop, Venice, Italy

Depart from Fondamente Nove for the fastest island connection. Lines 4.1, 4.2, and 12 run directly toward Murano; the ride takes roughly 15–20 minutes, and a valid vaporetto pass covers it.

  6. Murano Colonna Vaporetto StopMurano Colonna Vaporetto Stop, Murano, Venice, Italy

Get off at Colonna. Murano is known for glassmaking; the furnaces were moved here in 1291 to reduce fire risk and help protect the trade's secrets. Exploring independently is cheaper and more flexible than a bundled tour.

  7. Burano Vaporetto StopBurano Vaporetto Stop, Burano, Venice, Italy

Continue by vaporetto to Burano. Its brightly colored houses are traditionally associated with helping fishermen identify their homes in fog, while the island is also known for lacemaking. Reserve lunch before arriving if you plan to eat fish at the island's recommended restaurant.

  8. Trattoria al Gatto NeroTrattoria al Gatto Nero, Burano, Venice, Italy

Plan around a reservation: the restaurant serves fish only, is described as expensive, and is praised for spectacular food and matching service. Confirm the exact opening schedule when booking.

  9. CannaregioCannaregio, Venice, Italy

Finish in Cannaregio, one of Venice's more local and authentic districts. Look for quieter streets, local markets, family-run restaurants, and a final aperitivo with cicchetti before dinner.

  10. Jewish Ghetto of VeniceCampo del Ghetto Nuovo, Cannaregio, Venice, Italy

Explore the historic Jewish Ghetto, established by law in 1516. Its taller buildings reflect the need to house a growing population in a confined area. The museum and two synagogues open to the public provide deeper context on the neighborhood's history.
