Plan notes

Useful context before you go

This five-day rail journey crosses Canada on VIA Rail’s The Canadian from Vancouver to Toronto, then continues toward New York on Amtrak’s Maple Leaf and Metro-North. Delays are possible, so leave flexibility around connections and avoid assuming that a station stop allows time for a town visit. Checked luggage stays in the baggage car and cannot be retrieved en route; keep essentials in your carry-on. Sleeper passengers can use the lounge at Pacific Central Station. The double sleeper shown has a seat that converts to a bed, a sink and toilet, luggage storage, and a door that locks from the inside but not the outside; the room can be arranged as bunk beds or opened to connect with another room. Sleeper passengers also have access to a shower room with complimentary towels. Check current train schedules, station arrangements, border requirements, and attraction details before travel.

After crossing the Rockies, the train stops in Jasper. The station area has a preserved steam locomotive, and the visit includes a museum about Yellowhead Pass and the railway camps that helped form local towns.

**On board:** After Jasper, the route descends toward the plains. The open prairie scenery includes agricultural warehouses, grain silos, large farm machinery, and wildlife; the journey notes the train running at 130 km/h. Day 5: Niagara Falls and the final rail leg to New York

Board the Maple Leaf in Toronto for the cross-border leg. The Canadian-side Niagara Falls station is a U.S. customs checkpoint; allow time for inspection before planning a nearby visit.
